Responsibilities

  • Maintain and perform basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Inspect, service, repair, and overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drivelines, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, and ignition systems.
  • Repair and install hydraulic controls; tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Dismantle, repair, and reassemble air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders, and related equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, overhaul, and assemble automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
  • Complete mandated fleet inspections and ensure all equipment meets OSHA standards; perform repairs and modifications according to operational specifications and safety standards.
  • Weld, modify equipment, and fabricate parts as needed.
  • Operate vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, or completion of a formal post-secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment-related repair (at least 30 credit hours or one school year) and one year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, or two years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
  • Passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam prior to hire.
  • Pass the driving portion of the Class B CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status (Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire.
  • Obtain a valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and medical-physical examination.
  • Significant physical stamina and endurance; exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and environmental challenges.
