About the role

Total Safety is seeking an Equipment Technician to join their safety-conscious team. The Equipment Tech is responsible for providing quality workmanship in the cleaning, calibration, and repair of various gas monitoring systems and breathing air equipment.

Responsibilities

Receiving, inspecting, cleaning, servicing, reassembling, and testing of various SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) and other respirator equipment and breathing air equipment in accordance with approved testing and service procedures.
Aids in maintaining the breathable air loop system used by the customer.
Stocks shelves with clean, tested, and ready-to-use equipment, pulls, stages, loads, and prepares customer orders.
Maintains work area and other areas in a clean and orderly condition.
Performs routine inspection and maintenance of breathing air regulators and reducers.
Completes all documentation and data entry associated with inspection and repair in a timely and accurate manner, obtaining customer signatures for proper invoicing and documentation.
Conducts detailed visual inspections and system functional tests of various systems and equipment, reporting any deficiencies and corrective action recommendations to the customer.
Assesses repair needs and quotes customers on repair or replacement costs and delivery times.
Obtains and reviews entire work permits at the job site, identifying and correcting any mistakes.
Sets up jobs according to procedures for the work being performed, ensuring proper equipment is in place.
Ensures proper PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) is available and worn by workers, and maintains awareness of potential hazards.
Follows all safety guidelines and procedures while working, keeping communication with the crew and observing work conditions.
Completes job completion routines and documents all work performed.
Performs additional duties as required and assists others as needed.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED.
Associates degree, technical, or military training preferred.
At least one (1) year of field experience in fire protection, petrochemical, oil refinery, or related industries.
Valid driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance.
Ability to pass internal forklift certification as required.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

Demonstrated ability to operate electronic safety equipment and understand production platform shutdowns through fire and gas detection systems.
Ability to operate and maintain, reassemble, and test electronic safety equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
Knowledge of all regulatory standards pertaining to assigned responsibilities, including State, OSHA, and NFPA regulations.
General knowledge of applicable Code of Federal Regulations.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Proficiency in the care and use of all site-specific, facility, and customer-required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
Trained in Respiratory Protection and fully certified to wear respiratory breathing equipment (Fit Tested).
Ability to work in a team environment and assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Interpersonal communications skills, including reading, writing, and comprehending English, operational, process, safety, and quality instructions.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization, preferred.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Works in some customer environments during later part of training. May be exposed to high pressure, chemicals, and shop traffic. The noise level in work environment is usually moderate with hearing protection required in some areas.

Reporting Relationships

Complexity of duties and decisions: Performs a variety of manual functions. Follows established procedures to perform standardized tasks. Most errors are caught during self-inspection or by higher-level staff before leaving work unit. Supervisor assures that the work is technically accurate and in compliance with instructions or established procedures. Authority: Works under direct supervision. Specific instructions are given on assignments or follows written or verbal instructions and established procedures and standard practice to perform assigned tasks. No direct reports but may assist less experienced.
