Equipment Specialist - Automotive (Mechanic)

About the role

This position has been exempted from the federal civilian hiring freeze. The Equipment Specialist - Automotive (Mechanic) is responsible for different phases of vehicle maintenance, from initial inspection and diagnosis, to coordinating and administering different types of repairs.

Responsibilities

As an Automotive Specialist, you will be responsible for maintaining the operational readiness of the automotive fleet and related equipment. Key responsibilities include:

• Inspecting, testing, and performing corrective actions, and preparing new vehicles for assimilation into the Fleet
• Conducting technical research, obtaining additional facts, determining past equipment performance and previous correction actions
• Ensuring assigned vehicles are operational in accordance with manufacturer's specifications
• Ensuring appropriate registration to include tags, titles, and any necessary State inspections are completed

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must be a U.S. citizen and have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver’s license. Some travel may be required. You must also meet the physical demands of the job, which include:

• Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and stains
• Frequent lifting of parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying of items that weigh 50 pounds or more
• Exposure to vehicle fluids such as battery acid and hydraulic fluids that may cause burns or irritate the skin or be otherwise hazardous to health

Qualifications

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 or GS-9 grade level, depending on the position. Specialized experience includes:

• Performing vehicle maintenance and inspections to include anti-lock brakes, air conditioning systems, and anti-theft devices
• Performing operational assessments of vehicles using computer programs and diagnostic systems
• Maintaining liaison with internal customers and external vendors to gain information, answer questions, and resolve problems
• Reviewing and analyzing information and documents related to vehicle warranties, services, and supplies

A degree is not required for this position, but specialized experience can be used in lieu of a degree. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows: GS-9: Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

Skills

Desired skills include experience in the automotive repair/maintenance field with formal education or nationally recognized certification in diagnostic scan tool familiarization, EPA recognized refrigerant handling certification, state emissions or state level safety inspection license, and inspection and maintenance with emergency lighting systems.

Pay

The salary range for this position is GS 9: $52,727.00 - $68,549.00 and GS 11: $63,795.00 - $82,938.00. Note that the salaries listed are the base rate of pay for federal employees on the General Schedule (GS) pay scale, and a complete list of Pay Tables factoring in locality pay can be found on OPM.gov.

Schedule

The working hours for this position are 8:15am – 5:00pm, although hours may vary depending on Division needs.
