Equipment Specialist - Automotive (Mechanic)

About the role

The Equipment Specialist - Automotive (Mechanic) position is responsible for maintaining the operational readiness of the automotive fleet and related equipment. Responsibilities include inspecting, testing, performing corrective actions, and preparing new vehicles for integration into the fleet. Additionally, the specialist conducts technical research, obtains additional facts, determines past equipment performance, and evaluates actions for cost-effectiveness and technical efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the operational readiness of the automotive fleet and related equipment.
• Inspects, tests, and performs corrective actions on vehicles.
• Conducts technical research and obtains additional facts about vehicle performance.
• Determines if current problems warrant immediate corrective actions and evaluates their cost-effectiveness and technical efficiency.
• Ensures assigned vehicles are operational according to manufacturer's specifications.
• Ensures appropriate registration, including tags, titles, and state inspections.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver’s license.
• Some travel may be required.
• Frequent exposure to cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and stains.
• Frequent lifting of parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, and occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Exposure to vehicle fluids such as battery acid and hydraulic fluids.

Qualifications

• Experience in the automotive repair/maintenance field or nationally recognized certification in diagnostic scan tool familiarization.
• Desired skills include EPA recognized refrigerant handling certification, state emissions or state level safety inspection license, and experience with inspection and maintenance of emergency lighting systems.

Pay

The salary range for this position is:

• GS 9: $52,727.00 - $68,549.00
• GS 11: $63,795.00 - $82,938.00

Schedule

The working hours are 8:15am – 5:00pm, with some flexibility depending on Division needs.
