About the role
The Court is the fifth largest in the United States, with 109 Judges and 34 Commissioners located in seven justice centers throughout the County. Responsibilities
- Reports verbatim testimony and court proceedings using Computer Aided Transcription (CAT)
- Asks Judicial Officer for clarification of instructions, orders, or takes other actions to properly note the official court record
- Reads back all or portions of the official court proceedings
- Prepares transcripts; reviews and certifies transcripts of court proceedings
- Maintains a variety of electronic and paper files of the court record for which the court reporter is directly responsible; prepares daily transcripts as needed; and provides transcripts of proceedings on request of parties or by the court, pursuant to applicable codes
- May be required to change assignments on short notice or work temporary assignments at other Justice Centers
Requirements
- All applicants must have: A current Certified Shorthand Reporter’s (CSR) license
- Computer-aided transcription capability
- RealTime certification (CRR) or capability
- At least two years of Certified Shorthand Reporter experience including at least one year in a court environment
- Absolutely acceptable history with the CSR Board of California or the District Court of Appeal, as determined by the Recruitment Committee
- Worked as a reporter for a California Superior Court
- Broad reporting experience (e.g., preliminary hearings, civil trials, criminal trials, complex litigation, family law proceedings, juvenile proceedings, appeal transcripts, special transcripts, etc.)
- Experience in preparing daily transcripts
- Prepared transcripts for the District Court of Appeal or any other appellate courts
- Registered Merit Reporter certification (RMR)
- Sit and record verbatim proceedings accurately at sustained speed and duration for prolonged periods of time
- Hear well enough to understand and record verbatim testimony with competing background noise
- Use hands and wrists to keyboard on a steno machine
- Work with frequent interruptions
- Meet changing deadlines
- Read back steno notes

Application Review
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for minimum qualifications. Qualified applications will be submitted to the Recruitment Committee for consideration.
Job Simulation Exercise
If the applicant does not possess RealTime certification (CRR), a job simulation exercise will be required to demonstrate RealTime capability. The RealTime exercises will be given by the Official Court Reporters serving on the Recruitment Committee. All eligible applicants will be tested on their ability to read back from their steno notes. The Official Court Reporters will review the results of the exercise with the Committee to determine which applicants to refer to the next step in the process.
Transcript Review
A review of prior transcripts may be required as part of the recruitment process, as determined by the Recruitment Committee.
Interview
The Recruitment Committee will schedule one or more interviews with the candidates who have been referred to the interview process.
Eligible List
Candidates who are successful in steps 1-4 above will be placed on the Eligible List. The Eligible List will remain valid for one year, but may expire sooner or be extended by the Presiding Judge.
Job Offer
Job offers for Official Court Reporter will be extended to eligible candidates as determined by the Recruitment Committee.

INSURANCE PLANS
- Employees have an option to enroll in one of five medical plans; three HMO's (Cigna Select, Cigna Choice, and Kaiser Choice) and two PPO's (Wellwise Choice or Sharewell Choice), both administered by Blue Shield.

LONG-TERM CARE
- CalPERS Long-Term Care coverage is available to current and former California public employees, retirees, their spouses, parents, parents-in-law, children, siblings (including stepbrothers and stepsisters), grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law between the ages of 18 and 79 when they apply.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION
- Optional deferred compensation 457 & Roth 457 Deferred Contribution Plans are available.
VACATION ACCRUAL
- New full-time employees earn 80 hours of vacation after the employee has accumulated 2,080 regularly scheduled paid hours (after approximately 1 year of service).
- Following the first year, vacation is accrued as follows: 1-3 years, 80 hours per year; 4-9 years, 120 hours per year; 10-19 years, 160 hours per year; 20 or more years, 200 hours per year.
- Maximum accrual of hours: 0-9 years; 240 hours; 10 or more years, 320 hours.
- Part-time employees accrue vacation on a prorated basis.
SICK LEAVE
- 0-3 years accrue 72 hours of sick time per year as full-time employees.
- After 3 years, full-time employees accrue 96 hours per year.
- Part-time employees accrue sick leave on a prorated basis.
- Unlimited accrual.
WORKERS' COMPENSATION
- Administered by the Judicial Council's, third party administrator.
EDUCATION REIMBURSEMENT
- The Court reimburses up to $3,500 per year of tuition for approved, necessary courses, subject to availability of funds.
FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT AND FORGIVENESS PROGRAMS
- Employees of the Court may be eligible for Federal Student Loan Repayment and Loan Forgiveness Programs.
BI-LINGUAL PAY
- Available at additional $0.58/hour for selected classes in selected positions.
- Exceptional BILINGUAL PAY: Available for specific classes at a rate of $1.15/hour in selected positions.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)
- The Court offers EAP confidential services to assist employees with marital, family, emotional, legal, financial, and chemical dependency problems. This service is offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
DISCOUNT PROGRAMS
