Equipment Operator III (E) - Street Cleaning

Distinguishing Features of Work

This is skilled work in the safe and efficient operation of heavy and specialized automotive equipment and/or supervision of a crew engaged in maintenance or construction activities, including minor repair and servicing. Work may involve filling in for a supervisor in their absence. Work is performed independently under the general direction of the supervisor.

Employees within the department or division shall be given first consideration.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment to perform assigned street cleaning duties, maintenance such as pothole repair, or other construction tasks like street sign replacement. Examples of equipment operated include Global and Pelican street sweepers, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, and dump truck trailers.
• Specializes in specific operations and ensures quality execution.
• Performs mechanical maintenance and service work on equipment, including removal and replacement of brooms on street sweepers.
• Assists supervisors in daily work assignments and completion of paperwork.
• Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

• Considerable knowledge of automotive equipment operation and maintenance.
• Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in construction and maintenance activities.
• May require knowledge of methods for concrete, asphalt, and brick repairs, or knowledge of paints, thinners, and related supplies.
• Skill in the care and operation of heavy and specialized equipment.
• Ability to lead the work of others in maintenance operations.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances such as traffic, machine exhaust, and construction-related elements.
• Ability to safely and effectively use a chainsaw and/or jackhammer.
• Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of ear plugs.
• Physical ability to continuously perform tasks requiring pushing, pulling, climbing (ladders and in/out of vehicles), bending, twisting, reaching, standing, and walking (up to half a mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds independently and up to 200 pounds with assistance.
• May require the ability to maneuver onto riding machines with a steep first step or onto frames/fenders for fluid/filter checks and maintenance.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, including snow and ice removal.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Possession and ability to maintain a valid Kansas Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with tanker endorsement. Canadian or Mexican citizens must have or obtain a CDL from their home country.
• Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
