Equipment Operator II
About the role
The North Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking a dedicated and skilled professional to join our team. This position plays a vital role in creating safe, efficient, and innovative transportation solutions for communities across the state.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment to perform required maintenance duties like basic snow and ice control/removal.
- Assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining highway signs and guardrails.
- Complete highway maintenance duties, including keeping the roadways clear of hazards such as litter, waste, debris, garbage, and carcasses.
- Perform building and ground maintenance duties, and general routine maintenance of the roadway and radio system equipment.
- Perform minor preventive and repair maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain necessary paperwork, including time records, activity reporting, daily diary, road reports, etc.
- Receive training and perform construction project duties under close supervision.
Requirements
- A valid North Dakota Class A driver license without air brake restrictions and a cargo tank endorsement (N) by the first day of work.
- Two years of relevant experience or one year of experience and one season of winter operations similar to NDDOT.
- Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) reflecting the required abilities for this position may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis. Related MOS codes include Truck Driver (88M), Horizontal Construction Engineer (12N), and Pavements & Construction (3E2X1).
- Reporting to work within 30 minutes, after hours, on weekends, and on holidays during emergency events.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a vocational or technical program in highway maintenance or related field.
- Experience in operating heavy equipment and performing maintenance duties.
Skills
- Proficiency in using heavy equipment and tools.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations.

Pay
$4,840 / month
Schedule
Winter hours for this position will be 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. from November through April. Shift differential schedules will be established by the district weekly and will be paid a shift differential of $2.00 per hour. This position qualifies for Regional Pay Differential payment of $800 per month.
