Equipment Operator I - Pavement Operations

Equipment Operator I position in the Public Works Department, Pavement Operations team.

About the Role

The City of Colorado Springs is seeking Equipment Operators to perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks, operating a variety of equipment to repair and maintain streets and alleys. This role involves working with asphalt pavers, milling machines, rollers, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, pothole trucks, and compaction equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operate single/tandem axle dump trucks, plows, and sanders during snow removal.
• Transport materials and equipment to and from work sites.
• Safely use, service, and make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
• Perform manual labor such as shoveling, debris removal, and site clean-up.
• Assist other Public Works teams as business needs require.
• Follow all safety procedures and maintain accurate work records.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• One year of professional, full-time experience in general construction, manual labor, or a related field.
• Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restrictions.
• Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado CDL Class B driver’s license not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges. Current CDLs must be registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Basic operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment.
• Practices, methods, and materials used in general construction.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods.

Schedule

6:30 AM - 5:00 PM, either Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday depending on crew assignment after hire.

Pay

$21.78 - $26.14 hourly. Starting pay within the posted range is based on years of experience and education. The City offers an accredited pay equity program with opportunities for growth.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

• Ability to pull, reach, bend, climb, kneel, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently.
• Use fingers, hands, and legs; distinguish colors; safely operate assigned vehicle and equipment.
• Primary work environment is outdoors around moving vehicles and heavy machinery.
• Daily exposure to extreme temperatures, wetness and humidity, respiratory hazards (toxic chemicals, dust, fumes, odors, gases), noise, vibrations, physical hazards (motorized equipment and heavy traffic), and mechanical/electrical hazards.
• Frequent exposure to communicable diseases.
