This position supports the mission of Maintenance & Operations: to provide excellence in transportation by keeping the state’s road network in a state of good repair through careful and consistent application of personnel, equipment, and financial resources.

About the role

This is intermediate-level mechanic trade work. Positions report to a technical superior. Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions. This level diagnoses and troubleshoots equipment malfunctions, determines the problem, and repairs a variety of equipment, which may be unique to the agency. The position must be available to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergencies on short notice, sometimes with no advance notice.

Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible for promotion to the next level.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance, including lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, and testing equipment.
  • Uses manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, make adjustments, and diagnose equipment malfunctions or defects.
  • Repairs or replaces various parts and assemblies using mechanic power and hand tools.
  • Interprets schematics and blueprints to perform inspections, diagnosis, wiring procedures, and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, ignition, lighting, warning, and injection assemblies and component systems.
  • Operates computers, interprets parts and service manuals, and uses automated equipment management systems to perform research, order parts, prepare records, and analyze equipment malfunctions.
  • Fabricates parts, performs gas/electric welding, and makes body repairs.
  • Responds to road service requests and assists with tow trucks/wreckers.
  • Conducts road tests and operational checks for diagnostic purposes to determine equipment deficiencies and for post-maintenance tests.
  • Cleans and cares for tools, equipment, and shop facilities.
  • Follows safety rules and practices and complies with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.

Requirements

  • Six months’ experience diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions on light-duty vehicles such as pickup trucks, sedans, or vans.
  • Six months’ experience performing routine engine tune-ups on light-duty engines/system components, such as replacing spark plugs, engine timing, pollution control systems, and fuel systems.
  • Knowledge of minor body repair.
  • Knowledge of welding.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
  • Must possess a valid CDL Class A or B driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) or obtain one during the initial 90-day probationary period.
  • A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
  • Must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The State of Delaware participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm work authorization.
  • All new hires must report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment.
