About the role
This position involves caring for, feeding, monitoring, and performing minor treatments on equine and livestock animals. Duties include cleaning hooves, brushing and bathing coats, deworming, assisting veterinarians with procedures, assisting farriers with hoof work, and maintaining barn cleanliness.
Responsibilities
- Care for and feed equine and livestock animals
- Perform routine husbandry tasks such as cleaning hooves, brushing coats, and deworming
- Assist veterinarian during procedures like teeth floats, castrations, and blood draws
- Assist farrier with hoof work on animals
- Clean assigned barn and facility areas daily
- Maintain equipment, supplies, and vehicles in good condition and report any issues
- Report health and behavior issues to the Barn Manager
- Process adoption applications and serve as an adoption counselor
- Drive a Box Truck, Adoption Trailer, or livestock trailer as a driver for the Humane Society of North Texas
- Enter animal intake, medical, behavioral, and outcome data into the animal management database
- Keep current inventory of necessary supplies and report shortages to the Barn Manager
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Humane Society of North Texas policies and protocols
- Working knowledge of equine and livestock breeds, diseases, and behavior
- Ability to handle animals safely and gently
- Comfortable interacting with various behaviors in farm animals
- Positive working relationships with the public, volunteers, and staff
- Patience, courtesy, and ability to work under stress
- Initiative and flexibility in adapting to changing demands
- Effective reading, writing, and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel
- Associate’s degree in an animal-related field preferred, Bachelor’s degree preferred
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, and moderate noise levels. The position requires regular physical activity including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Pay
The pay range for this role is $16 - $18 per hour at Joshua Ranch.
