ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN I
About the role
The Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM), Storm Water Quality Division, seeks Environmental Technicians to gain hands-on field experience. These technicians will conduct inspections and investigations, respond to storm drain concerns, assist with water quality monitoring, and support enforcement actions.
Responsibilities
- Carry out hands-on storm water inspections and investigations to protect water quality
- Identify violations, issue notices or citations when needed, and support follow-up enforcement actions
- Respond to storm drain concerns, pollution complaints, and discharge inquiries from the public and businesses
- Assist with water quality monitoring, including field sampling, outfall inspections, and environmental data collection
- Maintain case files and compliance databases, prepare reports, and support regulatory documentation
- Work independently in the field, operate City vehicles, and collaborate with experienced environmental professionals
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to grow technical skills
Requirements
- Two years of technical field experience involving sampling, inspectional, and/or investigational work related to enforcing laws, ordinances, and/or rules and regulations
- Ability to conduct inspections and investigations to identify violations and ensure compliance
- Ability to collect and preserve field data and samples, using proper techniques and equipment
- Ability to operate and maintain relevant instruments, devices, and field tools
- Understanding, interpretation, and application of environmental laws, rules, and regulations
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and site specifications
- Proficiency in using software and digital tools such as Word, Excel, GIS, and CAD for reporting and mapping
- Ability to perform basic calculations, prepare reports, graphs, and other documentation
- Problem-solving, recommendation-making, and justification of actions taken in the field
- Clear communication of findings to others, including property owners, contractors, or community members
- Prioritize assignments and work effectively both independently and with others
Qualifications
- Equivalent to graduation from high school
- Associate's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university in Engineering Technology or Natural Sciences, or a Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, or in a Biological or Physical Science, may substitute for up to two years of the required technical field experience

Pay
Salary rate commensurate with applicable experience, pending approval

Flexible schedule to accommodate fieldwork outside of the office
Special Work Requirements
- Fieldwork outside of the office, which may involve operating a vehicle to and from inspection sites, exposure to traffic hazards, handling of chemicals and reagents, climbing into streams for sampling, walking on uneven, slippery, or obstructed surfaces, moderate lifting and carrying of equipment, entering high to medium-secured areas during construction and post-construction phases, opening storm drain utility covers, gratings, and other storm drainage structures, and entering high to medium-secured areas during construction and post-construction phases
- Overtime work, including weekends, holidays, and after hours for investigations, field sampling, and assisting with presentations to community groups
License Requirement
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license, as required. The current vacancy requires a current, valid Type 3 (automobile) license, prior to appointment.
