Environmental Technician
About the role
The Environmental Technician reports to the Team Leader and is a hands-on, field-focused role supporting environmental investigation, remediation, construction, and operations projects for industrial, commercial, and municipal clients. The position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, solving practical field problems, and building, repairing, and maintaining mechanical systems in a safe and professional manner. The role is primarily performed at EKI project sites in Northern California.
Responsibilities
- Prepare for and plan field work, including preparation of documentation and equipment, participation in planning meetings with project teams, coordination with laboratories, and scheduling the work of subcontractors
- Conduct field work at project sites including: Soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and indoor air sampling, Site inspections, Observe and document the work of other parties, Construction, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of remedial systems, Manage drillers and subcontractors, Construction management, Review and follow project work plans and standard procedures to ensure samples and data are collected and handled correctly
- Safely use hand tools, power tools, and field equipment including drills, saws, grinders, hammers, wrenches, pumps, generators, and other construction and maintenance equipment
- Aid with construction, installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of environmental remediation and monitoring systems, Perform field fabrication, assembly, modification, and repair of piping, fittings, pumps, hoses, valves, sampling systems, and related equipment, Support site construction activities including layout, material handling, equipment setup, trenching support, and system startup/shutdown activities, Maintain field vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment in a clean, organized, and operating condition
- Follow and enforce strict health and safety procedures while working around heavy equipment, construction activities, industrial facilities, and hazardous materials, Coordinate with senior staff on project planning, schedules, and site reports, Operate, maintain, and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment and tools, Manage and organize sampling supplies, equipment, vehicles, and office space at EKI's field office, Assist with planning and leadership of field skills and operations training for staff, Assist with special projects and other tasks as needed, Act as EKI and EKI’s clients’ on-site outward-facing professional representative
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferred
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Three to five (3 - 5) years of experience as a Technician, Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort performing hands-on work, Experience safely using hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment preferred, Experience in construction, mechanical trades, environmental field work, drilling support, remediation systems, automotive/mechanical repair, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fabrication, landscaping, or related technical trades is highly desirable, Ability to build, assemble, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain field systems and equipment, Ability to work safely and effectively around construction equipment, drilling operations, utilities, and industrial facilities, Comfortable working outdoors in physically demanding environments and variable weather conditions, OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training preferred but not required

Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Work in a fast-paced environment with high-volume workload and frequent short deadlines, Perform physically active outdoor work involving lifting, carrying, climbing, digging, tool operation, equipment setup, and material handling, Work safely around drilling equipment, excavation activities, construction sites, industrial operations, traffic, and active remediation systems, Use hand and power tools for field installation, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities, Frequently load, unload, transport, and organize tools, supplies, pumps, hoses, generators, and sampling equipment, Work in muddy, dusty, noisy, hot, cold, wet, or otherwise challenging field conditions, Obtain medical clearance to work on hazardous waste site(s)
- Maintain OSHA HAZWOPER and other applicable certifications including but not limited to ladder safety training, fall arrest training, etc., Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed, such as safety glasses, hard hat, boots, respirator, and hearing protection, Use powered equipment and heavy tools to perform shallow drilling, well and probe maintenance, maintenance of remedial systems, or remove nuts and bolts on filters or well vaults, etc., Travel Requirements: Travel is required and may be up to 75% or more of the time, including overnight stays for field work at potentially remote locations, Travel may be in an EKI company vehicle or your personal vehicle, with mileage reimbursement provided
