Job Title: Environmental TechnicianJob Description The Environmental Technician maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots, and repairs environmental monitoring equipment that supports water, soil, air, and gas sampling activities. This role focuses on ensuring that monitoring instruments and related field equipment operate accurately and reliably, while providing technical support to field personnel and internal teams in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Responsibilities Perform calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of environmental monitoring instruments and equipment to ensure accurate and reliable performance.Operate and maintain air monitoring devices, gas meters, water quality instruments, and related field equipment used for environmental sampling and monitoring.Review, interpret, and validate instrument data to confirm equipment accuracy and operational effectiveness.Assist with environmental testing activities and provide technical support to field personnel as needed.Diagnose and repair electronic and electromechanical equipment, including monitoring devices and associated systems.Conduct preventative maintenance and functional testing on monitoring devices and instrumentation to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues affecting equipment performance and implement effective corrective actions.Receive incoming equipment and instruments from field use and inspect for completeness, damage, serviceability, and possible contamination.Maintain accurate equipment inventories and ensure instruments are properly calibrated and available for field deployment.Fill equipment requests for monitoring instruments and field equipment, ensuring that all necessary accessories and calibration gases are provided.Check, certify, and record calibration of instruments prior to issue for project, field, or training use.Determine and document the cause of damage for equipment and instruments being returned from the field.Collaborate closely with field personnel and internal teams to understand equipment needs and provide timely technical support.Manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively in a fast-paced office and shop environment.Support environmental monitoring activities related to water, soil, air, and gas sampling by ensuring the right equipment is available and functioning properly. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience as an environmental or engineering technician.Hands-on experience with instrumentation calibration and electronics repair work.Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical tools and electromechanical systems.Experience working with air quality meters, gas meters, water quality meters, and electronic monitoring systems.Ability to review, interpret, and validate instrument data for accuracy and performance.Strong electronics repair skills, including diagnosing and resolving issues in monitoring devices.Proficiency using test equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters.Solid understanding of hydraulics, mechanical systems, and preventive maintenance practices.Environmental science or environmental field knowledge, including air quality monitoring and environmental monitoring principles.Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical systems.Mechanical aptitude for working with tools, devices, and equipment in a shop setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accurate data entry skills for documentation and reporting.High attention to detail and a methodical approach to calibration, repair, and documentation.Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with field personnel and internal teams.Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.Valid driver’s license. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with air monitoring equipment and related environmental field instruments.Familiarity with personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices in an environmental and shop setting.Ability to support environmental testing activities and field operations through reliable equipment preparation.Comfort working with data generated by monitoring instruments and using it to verify performance.Interest in building a long-term career in environmental monitoring and instrumentation support.Ability to work effectively in a small, close-knit team and contribute to a collaborative culture.Adaptability to varied tasks, including repairs, order processing, and shipping coordination. Work Environment This role operates within a small, close-knit team of approximately three individuals that is part of a larger national environmental and infrastructure services organization. The position is based in an office and shop environment, where you will perform equipment repairs, process equipment orders, and assist with shipping instruments to various offices. You will regularly work with environmental monitoring technologies such as air monitoring devices, gas meters, water quality instruments, electronic monitoring systems, and test equipment including oscilloscopes and multimeters. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. You will use appropriate personal protective equipment as needed when working with equipment and in the shop area, and you will interact frequently with field staff and office personnel to ensure they have the right equipment to perform their work effectively. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Antioch, IL. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $23.00/hr.
