About the role

Responsibilities
- Identify, research, and resolve environmental issues in areas of regulatory compliance, public health, environmental health, and pollution prevention.
- Conduct environmental inspections, compliance, monitoring, regulation, and research.
- Collaborate with others to build and maintain constructive relationships and respond effectively to concerns.
- Represent the department in contacts and relationships with the public, local business community, and other government agencies.
- Develop, prepare, and present studies and reports to governmental boards, civic organizations, and other groups.
Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Environmental Specialist (Level I): Either graduation from an accredited college or university with major in health science, public health, natural science, physical science, environmental science, or a related field, or written proof of acceptance of education required by the State of California Environmental Health Services.
- Environmental Specialist (Level II): Graduation from an accredited college or university with major in health science, public health, natural science, physical science, environmental science, or a related field, or possession of valid certification as Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) by State of California.
- Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stoop and kneel, climb, walk rough terrain, work in adverse weather conditions, and perform duties outside of normal working hours.
- Professional Certification/Registration Requirements: Possession of valid certification as Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Dairy Inspector by State of California for positions requiring these certifications.
Qualifications
- Education: Relevant degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: At least one year of professional experience in environmental regulation, analysis, or environmental research for Level II positions.
Skills
- Knowledge of environmental compliance assurance principles.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply scientific, legal, technical, and complex guidelines.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, using scientific and technical terminology.
- Ability to locate, research, interpret, and apply environmental laws and regulations.
- Ability to prioritize and coordinate activities, meet critical deadlines, and work independently within established guidelines.
