About the role

This position is responsible for air-related environmental compliance primarily at the Lake Charles North and/or South Plants and provides technical support for operations and engineering activities. Technical support may include compliance with all necessary regulatory permitting, operations, record keeping, reporting, and statutory/regulatory agency requests. The environmental specialist supports the Environmental Team in developing and implementing proactive management systems, checks and balances, and other necessary systems to ensure effective environmental compliance. The role requires effective interaction with other department managers and regulatory officials to set a positive image for the Environmental Department and the Company.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures day-to-day compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
  • Assists in preparing compliance calendars, permit requirement summaries, and compliance checklists.
  • Assists with gathering monitoring data and reasonable inquiry submissions (Title V) and Periodic Monitoring data, following up with operations to address gaps.
  • Reviews Title V data and permits for accuracy and completeness, ensuring quality where applicable.
  • Assists or has primary responsibility for required agency reporting.
  • Provides technical support for corrective actions and recommendations related to spills and releases.
  • Supports Operations and Regional HSE Business Unit Partners in analyzing, reviewing, and reporting compliance status monthly.
  • Collaborates with the Site Sustainability team on key CO₂, energy, waste, and water reduction initiatives.
  • Manages and/or compiles/analyzes environmental site metrics, communicating via dashboards and monthly/quarterly submittals.
  • Serves as a multimedia reviewer for project AFEs and MOCs as needed.
  • Manages/oversees training required by environmental permits or regulations, including developing training content and conducting training on air regulations.
  • Maintains active voluntary participation in representing Westlake’s concerns on recognized industry task forces/advisory committees and through public awareness/education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ experience with environmental compliance responsibilities preferred.
  • Permitting experience (Title V, NPDES, RCRA) preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and influence/negotiate with others at various organizational levels and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with operations, technical, and maintenance personnel and interact positively with environmental professionals and the business to maximize results.
  • Ability to take initiative, self-manage, identify needs, and implement change while maintaining Westlake’s core values.
  • Successful candidates must satisfy background screening, including motor vehicle record screening, drug testing, and pre-employment physical requirements before starting work.
  • A current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.

Skills

  • Close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision, with the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, use of hands, and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Regular lifting and/or moving of up to 10 pounds, frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, typically based in an office. Some work may require operating units, necessitating the use of required PPE such as safety glasses and hearing protection. Exposure to outside elements, stairs, and elevators may occur. Occasional travel, including air or auto travel, may be required.
