Environmental Specialist

The Shepherd Color Company, a subsidiary of The Shepherd Material Science Company, is a leader in the color industry with a history of innovation in highly engineered ceramic colorants. Our pigments are impervious to sunlight, chemicals, and thermal attack, used in applications from cookware to roofing and siding for color and IR reflectivity.

About the role

We are seeking a detail-oriented professional to provide Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) expertise for The Shepherd Color Company and Glass Coatings and Concepts, LLC. This onsite role involves supporting company initiatives with a health and safety emphasis, partnering with the EHS team to manage day-to-day plant safety, maintain regulatory requirements, and facilitate the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) program.

Responsibilities

• Work with the EHS team to meet regulatory requirements.
• Maintain an effective NESHAP program and other environmental programs.
• Actively read and research EHS publications to keep the plant aware and up-to-date on regulations.
• Participate in and eventually lead routine EHS training (forklift, confined space, lockout/tagout, spill team, fall protection, DOT, hazardous waste, fire extinguisher, behavioral-based safety, employee orientations, hazard identification, and risk reduction). Develop new programs as needed and maintain records.
• Lead plant safety quarterly audits, new equipment installations/inspections, and pre-startup safety inspections.
• Serve as a regulatory technical expert; review regulations as assigned; write reports and collect data; write and review procedures; research and order supplies; maintain departmental computer programs; and keep records.
• Serve as a backup to other EHS team members, including supporting activities at Glass Coatings and Concepts.
• Provide support for security-related functions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree preferred in EHS, Chemistry, Engineering, or other science or safety-related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of environmental EHS experience required; 5+ years preferred.
• Chemical industry experience required; manufacturing experience preferred.
• Process Safety Management experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries and with all levels of the organization and stakeholders.
• Exceptional attention to detail, documentation, and records management.
• Able to concisely present information and train others.
• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Work Environment
