About the role

We are seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our Midwest environmental services department, responsible for operations in Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama. This role involves directing or assisting in the development of environmental permit applications and reports, providing technical expertise in permitting and compliance (air quality, hydrogeology, biology, chemical and waste storage and management), and handling permit administrative duties such as renewals, modifications, and required reporting. The position may also provide field assistance to active mine sites.

  • Preparation and review of scientific data for inclusion in permit applications and environmental plans and reports to meet regulatory performance standards and minimize mine costs.
  • Knowledge of hydrology permitting and monitoring requirements, including completing periodic reporting and modifying plans to operational and regulatory needs (NPDES, SPCC, SMCRA).
  • Knowledge of air permitting, monitoring, and reporting requirements, including obtaining monitoring certifications (SSOA, MSOP, FESOP).
  • Knowledge of waste and chemical storage, management, and spill requirements, including familiarity with reporting obligations (TRI, SPCC) and assisting operations with waste/spill management and contractor coordination.
  • Knowledge of wetland and stream mitigation permitting, including reviewing and compiling monitoring data for submission to regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate and prepare permit administration documents, such as:
    • NPDES discharge reporting, applications, modifications, and renewals.
    • Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans.
    • Air permit applications, modifications, and renewals, including periodic air permit reporting (opacity Method 9).
    • Wetland and stream mitigation reporting.
  • Collaborate on permit applications, revisions, and amendments with mine and agency personnel, and direct department personnel as needed.
  • Provide temporary assistance to mine environmental staff during extended personnel absences and support other Peabody Americas operations as needed.

Schedule

This is a full-time role based at the Wild Boar mine in Indiana. The schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime and weekends as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum B.S. Degree in an Environmental-related field; MS preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in mining or a similar industry.
  • Knowledge of Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama environmental regulations.

Skills

  • Strong commitment to safety.
  • Excellent organizational and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); experience with AutoCAD, GIS, and Access is desired.
  • Effective written and verbal communication with all levels of management, mine personnel, the public, and regulatory agencies.
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team setting.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and adjust to shifting priorities.

Licensure/Certifications/Registration

Preferred ability to obtain professional certifications, including but not limited to LPG, GISP, or PE.

Physical Requirements

Surface Environment

  • Ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift.
  • Ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb stairs/steps, and climb on/off equipment and ladders.
  • Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE as mandated by Company and MSHA.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), with rapid reflex movements of arms and legs and good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to lift/raise 10–50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the work shift.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions, including changing weather, dust, mud, varying noise levels, and confined spaces.

Office

  • Ability to sit for up to 8 hours.
  • Ability to use a computer, communicate via email and phone, and review paper/electronic documents.
  • Ability to complete computer data entry from paper documents.
  • Ability to manage files (retrieve, remove, return) from file cabinets.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.
