About the role

AECOM is actively seeking an Environmental Specialist/Planner specializing in environmental compliance, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, and/or permitting for a current contract with the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) in Huntsville, Alabama. AECOM is a subcontractor on the MDA Technical, Engineering, Advisory and Management Support (TEAMS) Environmental Management contract with offices located on Redstone Arsenal, AL. The successful applicant will join the TEAMS group and work with Environmental Scientists and Engineers in a demanding and intellectually stimulating environment. This position may allow for hybrid work with some remote and some office presence required but is subject to change based on U.S. Government requirements.

The emphasis of this position is on environmental compliance, planning, and permitting; and environmental impact assessment and NEPA reporting. Applicants must demonstrate general knowledge of the natural and man-made environments subject to evaluation in NEPA studies; specialization in one or more NEPA technical resource areas is a plus; and technical expertise in one or more specific areas of environmental compliance, planning and permitting. This position requires a positive, resilient, self-starter with an ability to quickly learn on the job, adapt to changing circumstances, and effectively interface with internal and external project team participants. Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills are a prerequisite of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide research and technical writing to support development of environmental documents.
  • Interpret and apply environmental statutes, regulations and Executive Orders for compliance with relevant local, state, and federal laws.
  • Support regulatory consultations with resource management agencies.
  • Assist with client or stakeholder meeting preparation, facilitation, and documentation.
  • Assist with air permit applications and reports for regulatory submittal.
  • Participate as a field crew member to assist with baseline environmental surveys, natural resource surveys, or site assessments.
  • Work as part of multidisciplinary teams that support the preparation of NEPA and other planning studies and reports; preparation of permits; evaluations of compliance; and site assessments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, biology, natural or cultural resources, archaeology, architectural history, geology, chemistry, or an earth science or engineering-related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Familiarity with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship is required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years industry experience; Master’s degree or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is preferred.
  • Organizational management skills and ability to perform detail-oriented work.
  • High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting, as well as in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of NEPA process requirements.
  • Demonstrated research, writing, verbal, and organization skills.
  • Proficiency in word-processing and integrated software applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Specific experience with federal projects and military construction.
  • Technical proficiency in understanding designs and performing impact analysis calculations for air quality, airspace, noise and transportation.
  • Strong experience with environmental compliance and permitting, including ability to work on complex projects, within interdisciplinary teams, and balance a demanding workload, as well as interface with clients.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment.
  • Excellent and advanced writing skills.
  • Professional certification(s) (e.g., PE, AICP, CEP, PMP, PG, CWB, PWS, etc.).

  • Candidate must be able to travel and participate in field work and site assessments.
  • All newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
