About the role

Participates as an Environmental Services (E.S.) team member and performs a variety of cleaning and maintenance duties to insure the safety and cleanliness of the internal and external premises of the facility. Interacts on a daily basis with the Lead E.S. Worker, other cleaning service personnel when applicable, maintenance and repair personnel, as well as persons served, guests, and staff. Assists staff with a variety of tasks, such as preparing resident rooms for admission, cleaning public areas, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Follows established work schedule in cleaning and maintaining assigned internal areas of responsibility (public areas and hallways, program areas, residential areas, etc.).
  • Follows established work schedule in cleaning and maintaining assigned external premises/grounds (front entrance area, back entrance area by dining room, parking lot areas, fence lines, etc.).
  • Cleans and maintains carpets and flooring, including tasks such as stripping/waxing floors, vacuuming/wet-vacuuming carpets, and spot cleaning soiled areas.
  • Maintains a constant awareness of the aesthetic values of the facility and contributes to the enhancement and improvement of these values by insuring clean and aseptic conditions throughout House of Mercy by scouring, dust mopping, high dusting, wet mopping, damp dusting, removing trash, washing walls and ceilings.
  • Regularly checks supply inventory and generates purchase orders when/where needed.
  • Picks up and returns keys, pager (when applicable) at the beginning and end of each work shift.
  • Promptly reports existing furniture needs, as well as equipment, maintenance and building issues to the E.S. Lead Worker and/or Director, completing work orders when/where appropriate.
  • Performs general cleaning services throughout the House of Mercy when/where necessary without having to be prompted or asked.
  • In absence of Lead E.S. worker and/or any contracted cleaning service staff, takes initiative in identifying soiled areas and promptly following through with necessary cleaning.
  • Assists with resident admissions/discharges, insofar as cleaning, shampooing carpets, painting walls, making other minor repairs as needed, and ensuring adequate bedding is available in rooms.
  • Assists with painting and maintenance of building’s interior walls.
  • Demonstrates initiative in addressing changing/unscheduled environmental service issues where and when they arise.
  • Maintains both high standards of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, persons served and guests.
  • Assists in completing safety checklists and conducting monthly safety drills (i.e. fire and tornado).
  • Participates in House of Mercy’s Performance Quality Improvement Process as appropriate.
  • Maintains up-to-date Safety Material Data Sheets (MSDS) of chemicals used in the building in the MSDS book kept in the front office.
  • Promptly reports/seeks assistance from clinical staff when encountering inappropriate behavior from persons served, guests, visitors, etc. to ensure a safe environment.
  • Communicates regularly with Lead E.S. Worker and/or Director to discuss daily operations, concerns, opportunities for improvement, “in-house” issues, etc.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak English.
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in building safety, cleanliness and maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to operate a household vacuum, floor cleaning and buffing equipment, etc.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within thirty (30) days of employment.

Physical Demand Requirements

  • Constant: Walking, Standing, Stooping, Reaching, Handling.
  • Frequent: Pushing/Pulling, Lifting.
  • Occasional: Climbing.

Equipment/Tools

  • Vacuum, telephone, computer, buffer, broom, mop, printer, radio, snow shovel

Working Conditions

  • Noise: sufficient to require raising voice.
  • Food Spills/Wet Spots: on floor surfaces.
  • Hazards: chemicals, slippery floors, working on stepladders.
  • Atmosphere’s Conditions: dust, odors, aerosol sprays.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Director of House of Mercy.
