About the Role

We are seeking an Environmental Services Aide I to maintain optimum levels of cleanliness and disinfection in patient care, ancillary, and public areas of Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for our diverse community.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out duties to maintain cleanliness and disinfection in resident/patient rooms, bathrooms, nursing stations, ancillary rooms, lounges, waiting areas, public restrooms, and examination rooms.
  • Follow the 5-Step Cleaning process and other departmental procedures, including:
    • Dust mopping floors and damp mopping spills
    • Reconditioning floors
    • Spot washing walls
    • Cleaning patient rooms (beds, venetian blinds, furniture, etc.)
    • Dusting and polishing wooden and metal furniture
    • Disposing of rubbish and restocking supplies
    • Cleaning restrooms (toilets, mirrors, countertops, sinks, etc.)
  • Operate cleaning equipment and supplies for various tasks.
  • Move heavy objects (beds, desks, copy machines, etc.) for cleaning purposes.
  • Identify and dispose of medical waste following hospital regulations.
  • Perform hand hygiene before and after patient transport; wear a provided laboratory coat during transport.
  • Escort patients within the Medical Center using appropriate transportation (wheelchair, bed, stretcher).
  • Assist Nursing with patient lifting when requested.
  • Transport deceased patients to the morgue.
  • Maintain records of assignments, including descriptions, times, and signatures.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort (e.g., secure safety straps, check IV poles, provide proper covers).
  • Keep equipment (stretchers, wheelchairs) clean and in good repair.
  • Participate in mandatory educational and in-service programs.
  • Deliver customer service with respect, professionalism, and patience in accordance with performance expectations.
  • Maintain departmental policies, safety standards, and infection control protocols.
  • Adhere to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct and uphold its Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.

Requirements

  • Housekeeping experience is a plus but not required; formal on-the-job training provided.
  • Minimum of 1 year of previous patient care experience preferred.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English as required by the position.
  • Must possess and maintain Heart Saver Certification.
  • Ability to perform lifesaving skills.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalency preferred.

Job Setting / Physical Demands

  • Work in all areas of the Medical Center.
  • Extremely heavy physical effort (lift/carry 50 lbs. or more).
  • Frequent prolonged standing/walking.
  • Push/pull or move heavy equipment and supplies.
  • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and/or crouching.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility.
  • Lift, position, push, and/or transfer patients.

Pay

$19.00 per hour with differentials of $1.15 for evening, night, and weekend shifts.
