Environmental Scientist I/II
Compensation: $25-35/hour (negotiable)
Location: Springfield or Chicago, Illinois
About the role
Support water resources and watershed management projects predominantly in the Midwest US. Opportunities for project assignments elsewhere in the US may exist.
Responsibilities
- Water quality, hydrology and hydrogeology monitoring programs and field data acquisition.
- Manage surface and groundwater monitoring programs and scientific equipment and telemetry systems, including installation/deployment, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting etc.
- Cook up with other field technicians, project team members and project managers.
- Manage and maintain large datasets and perform data analysis and reporting.
- Coordinate with other field technicians, project team members and project managers.
- Perform watershed inventories and assessments requiring field surveys and GIS analysis.
- Aid with the development of watershed plans and scientific consulting reports: writing report sections, drafting maps, plots, tables and other figures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, hydrology, water resources science, ecology or related discipline.
- One or more years of professional experience in the public or private sector is preferred.
- Experience with environmental monitoring and installing/maintaining scientific instruments, often with telemetry systems.
- Ability to independently learn and operate scientific equipment, understand and follow laboratory and field methods.
- Proficiency in MS Office and other Microsoft products, especially MS Excel (statistical programs such as R and Matlab are a strong plus).
- Proficiency in GIS – ESRI’s ArcPro.
- Ability to manage, organize and analyze tabular and geospatial datasets.
- Basic knowledge of watershed planning and Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce nonpoint source pollution especially in agricultural settings.
- Some experience working with watershed stakeholders, and the agricultural sector.
- Strong verbal and technical writing and communication skills required.
- Responsive, capable of working independently and with a diversity of team members.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks, often with competing priorities and work extended hours when required.
- Positive attitude, accept constructive critique, be flexible and self-motivated, growth mindset, and pay spectacular attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license.
