What Attracted Her to This Career
Melissa has always been fascinated by the living world, particularly birds and their ability to adapt to changing environments. She sought a career that allowed her to work outdoors while contributing meaningfully to society.
Typical Work & Experience
Her work has included a variety of field-based projects, such as:
- Camera trapping and fauna surveys
- Behavioral monitoring of wildlife
- Vegetation assessments
- Mist netting for birds and bats
- Monitoring marine turtles and their nests
- Volunteer zookeeping
Her current Honours project focuses on data analysis, examining how bird presence and health may respond to climate change. Fieldwork has taken her to spectacular locations and introduced her to passionate, dedicated colleagues.
What She Loves About Her Job
Melissa finds purpose in her work, particularly in science communication and photography, which help raise awareness about the planet’s biodiversity. She is inspired by the dedication of her peers and the urgency of studying species before they are lost to climate change.
As someone who is deaf/Hard of Hearing, Melissa aims to show students that disabilities need not limit career aspirations. She encourages embracing all aspects of oneself and finding alternative paths to success.
