Environmental Scientist – Entry Level (Hybrid)

About the Role

Barr is seeking an environmental scientist to join our Duluth team. The person in this position will work with project teams on water resources, civil and environmental engineering, and related technical assignments. They will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other Barr staff members to help project teams meet ecological and regulatory constraints and prepare applications and reports required for project permitting, implementation, and mitigation of natural resource impacts.

Responsibilities

• Wetland delineation: Assist with wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments.
• Report writing: Perform botanical and wildlife surveys, conduct threatened and endangered species reviews, and prepare environmental impact assessments.
• Permitting: Develop permit applications.

Requirements

• Travel requirement: Up to 40 percent domestic field and/or on-site work.
• Work environment: Ability to work in locations with rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, and/or rural outdoor sites, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
• Driver’s license: Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, water resources, biology, natural resource management, soil science, or a similar natural resources field.
• Experience:
  • Knowledge of Minnesota and federal wetland-related regulations, federal and state endangered species programs, and permitting processes (Minnesota Wetland Conservation Act, Minnesota Work in Public Waters, and Clean Water Act Section 404).
  • Knowledge of the 1987 Manual for wetland delineation and wetland classification systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of project teams.
  • Demonstrated written and oral presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Pay

Anticipated range: $65,000–$75,000/year. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.

Hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position, splitting time between Barr's Duluth, Minnesota office and a home office.
