General Responsibilities

  • Collecting chemical, bacteriological and biological samples of surface waters for analysis to assess stream health.
  • Conducting sanitary surveys of community and non-community public water systems to ensure compliance with federal and state drinking water standards.
  • Serving as a knowledgeable point of contact for public water system operators, landowners, and local stakeholders, providing guidance on regulatory requirements and compliance.
  • Traveling regularly to monitoring sites and public water systems across a 17-county service area using a state-provided vehicle.
  • Accurately documenting field findings, maintaining organized records, and inputting data into digital systems.
  • Participating in occasional investigations related to illegal discharges, surface water quality concerns, or public water drinking water complaints.
  • Collaborating with internal regulatory teams, consultants, water system operators, elected officials, and members of the public to resolve issues and support environmental goals.

Requirements

Preferred bachelor's degrees include environmental science, biology, chemistry, wildlife biology, or related fields. Preference may be given to candidates with a background in chemical sampling, macrobenthic invertebrate sampling and identification, and laboratory analyses and procedures of water samples.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have strong time management and organizational skills, along with excellent customer service and communication abilities. Fieldwork in rural areas, construction sites, and all weather conditions, and frequent day travel are required.

Skills

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is preferred. Knowledge of GIS software and remote sensing techniques is beneficial.
