Environmental Protection Specialist

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Environmental Protection Specialist to support environmental safety by ensuring responsible waste management across the region. This role offers the opportunity to grow your environmental skills while guiding important inspections and reviews, contributing to safe and compliant facility operations.

About the Role

This position serves as a regional expert for waste management programs, supporting inspections, permit reviews, and remediation activities. You will help ensure facilities follow regulations, maintain safe operations, and provide accurate information to the department.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field inspections for permitted waste facilities and evaluate compliance with regulations.
• Assist with the review of permits, financial assurance documents, and compliance histories.
• Manage cleanup activities funded through abatement programs and review technical project documents.
• Maintain inspection and enforcement information in department systems to ensure accuracy.
• Support training efforts and share knowledge to help new staff understand program requirements.
• Review operations and documentation to ensure facilities follow established policies and procedures.

Schedule

• Full-time employment.
• Work hours: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Travel for site visits is required.
• Telework: Opportunity to work from home up to 3 days per week, contingent on a securely configured high-speed internet connection and an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If telework is not feasible, reporting to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh is required. Telework eligibility is subject to change.

Pay

Starting annual salary for new employees with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: $60,538.00 (before taxes).

Requirements

• One year of experience as a journey-level specialist in a waste management program; or
• Two years of experience in environmental protection and a bachelor’s degree with major coursework in biology, chemistry, or a closely related field. A master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of required experience; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
• Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirements.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.
