Environmental Protection Equipment Specialist

Responsibilities

• Maintain daily operation of fume hood exhaust air scrubbers and acid waste neutralization systems.
• Clean sump tank, monitor conductivity readings and pH readings.
• Maintain daily operation of biocide pump system and order biocide chemical as needed.
• Test sump solution for bacterial and fungal growth, adjust biocide levels as needed.
• Clean spray heads and replace heads as needed.
• Clean conductivity sensors and pH probes, calibrate and replace as needed.
• Check pH readings with hand‑held pH probe, calibrate pH probes, and replace pH probes as needed.
• Test pH probes and pH monitoring equipment using pH buffer solutions, calibrate as required.
• Maintain daily operation of chemical feed pump (CFP) systems.
• Replace and repair chemical feed pumps and system components; rebuild pumps, install diaphragms and check valves, test and replace electronic control modules, prime pumps as required.
• Maintain sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid solutions to chemical feed pump stations, order chemicals as required, and exchange empty chemical vessels.
• Monitor computer systems for chemical feed stations.
• Research and prepare sketches and specifications for process systems to improve existing systems and design new systems.
• Perform preventative and predictive tasks such as monitoring and ordering chemicals, cleaning work area and equipment, and replacing and repairing component parts and chemical supply tubing.
• Perform periodic testing of process equipment and safety equipment.
• Troubleshoot system and equipment failures and alarm notifications.
• Maintain personal protection equipment (PPE) for working with equipment and process chemicals.
• Retrofit out‑of‑date equipment to current industry standards.
• Assemble, disassemble, and fabricate parts as needed to test, repair and maintain environmental protection equipment.
• Program, troubleshoot and calibrate conductivity sensors and pH probes.
• Damp mop machine‑room floor surfaces, clean machine/equipment surfaces, and clean up spills during and after any spill/flood event.
• Maintain cleanliness and order of machine room.
• Assist in the commissioning of new equipment.
• Provide in‑service training to other employees on the operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of system equipment.
• Provide system operational overview and safety procedures for all equipment and process chemicals.
• Plan and schedule tasks requiring cleanroom/lab shutdowns with cleanroom staff, building facilities staff and others.
• Act as Safety Officer and assist individuals when they work on the environmental protection equipment.
• Maintain MSDS information for chemicals.
• Inspect, maintain, repair and replace other specialized equipment and facilities systems.
• Inspect, maintain, repair and replace pumps, compressors, and motors.
• Inspect, repair, and replace water, sewer, air, and gas lines.
• Inspect and test steam and hot water systems, fire and sprinkler systems, compressors and air and exhaust systems to assure correct operation, cycling and functioning of gauges, valves and controllers.
• Repair and replace sheet metal structures such as ducts, roof gutters, flashing, tanks, blowers, drain pipes, machine guards, and fan or filter housings.
• Repair and replace electrical outlets, switches and light fixtures.
• Braze, solder, and weld pipe, sheet metal and metal fixtures.
• Adjust, repair, and replace sheaves, bearings, belts, and guards.
• Repair and replace sinks, commodes and urinals, including faucets and valve assemblies.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications to locate machinery, ducts, piping and valves, and apply manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance and repair procedures.
• Prepare sketches and specifications for structural components and building fixtures.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working in a maintenance field.
• Experience with HVAC, electrical repair, plumbing repair, and carpentry repair.
• Good record‑keeping skills.
• Familiarity with computer application software.
• Familiarity with the use of hand tools.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to operate a UM vehicle.
• Ability to routinely move and position heavy objects.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience working with chemicals.
• Experience working in clean labs.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 5:30 am – 2:00 pm. Hired candidates may be asked to respond to after‑hours emergencies and to work overtime as needed.
