Environmental Project Manager I

HGL has an opening for an Environmental Project Manager I to support project work based out of our Reston, VA headquarters. This role manages large-scale, multi-year projects for government clients, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with other federal and state agencies.

Responsibilities

• Manage and support CERCLA-regulated remediation projects and field investigations at hazardous waste sites.
• Develop project budgets based on scope and project schedules to meet performance and payment milestones.
• Direct, manage, and lead project teams to meet project objectives in line with corporate and customer quality expectations.
• Communicate effectively with clients, regulators, project team members, field crews, subcontractors, and company management.
• Analyze and interpret environmental and analytical data.
• Manage technical and administrative aspects of project deliverables, including reviewing and authoring technical reports (e.g., CERCLA Remedial Investigations, Feasibility Studies, Remedial Designs, Remedial Action Work Plans).
• Procure subcontractors, develop cost estimates, and oversee field teams.
• Manage project risks and develop associated mitigation approaches and strategies.
• Support business development efforts, including leading or supporting proposal efforts.
• Supervise project staff.
• Travel to project sites and client offices, as needed, approximately 10% of the time.
• Utilize approved digital and AI-assisted tools to support technical documentation, data analysis, project communications, and workflow efficiency.

Requirements

• Minimum 4 years of experience executing and managing EPA, DoD, and/or DOE investigation and remediation projects regulated by CERCLA and/or RCRA.
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or a related environmental field.
• Strong technical writing, organizational, and oral communication skills.
• Directly relevant experience demonstrating responsibility, initiative, motivation, and creative problem-solving.
• Willingness to support technical tasks ranging from fieldwork and field operations to development of specifications, data management, evaluation, and report preparation.
• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of appropriate methodologies for groundwater, surface water, soil, and sediment sampling at CERCLA and RCRA sites.
• Excellent time management and organization skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
• Ability to build consensus among leadership and stakeholders through effective interpersonal communication and relationship-building.
• EPA Superfund experience and knowledge of the CERCLA process and work phases.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new technologies and digital tools to improve project delivery and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field (preferred).
• Experience mentoring and supervising staff (preferred).
• Current 40-hr OSHA HAZWOPER certification and associated 8-hr refresher (preferred).
• Professional credentials (e.g., PE, PG, and/or PMP) (preferred).
• Experience with Microsoft Project (preferred).
• Experience using generative AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to improve technical writing, data analysis, research, visualization, or project delivery efficiency (preferred).

Physical & Environmental Requirements

• Ability to lift/move/relocate items up to 50 lbs.
• Prolonged sitting or standing up to 70% of the time (depending on task).
• Walking long distances and repetitive hand motions (typing, tool use, etc.).
• Ability to see details at close range and at distance, including viewing computer screens for extended periods.
• Ability to interpret and analyze visual data (maps, graphs, warning indicators, etc.).
• Driving a company or personal vehicle; climbing ladders or stairs.
• Analyzing and synthesizing data; complex problem-solving and decision-making.
• Reading and interpreting technical documents or regulations; writing reports, proposals, or technical documentation.
• Leading a team or coordinating multiple priorities; managing competing deadlines and shifting priorities.
• Communicating effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.).
• Travel approximately 10% per year; potential for occasional longer workdays of up to 12 hours.
• May work in environments with loud noises, dust, or hazardous materials; must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when in the field.

Pay

The annual salary for this position ranges from $96,480 to $144,720. Final salary may be impacted by factors including contractual requirements, geographic location, education, training, experience, and skills.

Schedule

• Standard 5-day work week; field schedules may vary based on job requirements and may require longer hours as needed.
• In-office position at HGL’s Reston, VA headquarters.
• Travel approximately 10% of the time.
