Environmental Lab Chemist
About the role
This position reports directly to the SM/Environmental Laboratory Supervisor and works closely with the Environmental Group to carry out job duties. You will complete reporting requirements as directed by the SM/Environmental Lab Supervisor and/or the Environmental Lab Group Leader. In their absence, you may serve as an upgrade for the SM/Environmental Lab Supervisor or back up for the SM Process Lab Specialist.
You will perform assignments in alignment with established procedures, prioritizing personal safety and the safety of coworkers. Participation in problem-solving teams—such as incident investigations, safety committees, process hazard analysis, continuous improvement, turnaround preparation, and other loss control projects—is expected. You will actively support policies and management systems to drive continual improvement, ensure compliance with legal and organizational requirements, prevent pollution, and enhance customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Assist the SM/Environmental Lab Supervisor with the maintenance and upkeep of lab instrumentation and equipment in the Environmental Lab.
- Oversee work activities and assist with training Environmental Lab Technicians.
- Provide chemistry-related support to Technical and other departments for plant operations, wastewater treatment, and environmental control.
- Maintain calibration and standards programs for lab equipment.
- Coordinate, perform, or assist with special projects as directed.
- Perform scheduled routine analyses, housekeeping, and other assigned activities or special projects.
- Develop and implement test methods and performance standards to meet Laboratory objectives (including ISO 9001).
- Maintain laboratory instruments in working order, including operation, troubleshooting, and upkeep. Ensure preventive maintenance, calibration, and quality checks are conducted as scheduled or when needed.
- Conduct assigned physical and chemical tests on groundwater, benzene waste, wastewater discharges, and permit samples, following established documentation procedures.
- Update and maintain lab procedures in the Environmental Lab Manual.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or a related technical degree.
- Minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience.
- Strong supervisory, computer, and quality control skills.
- Knowledge of lab instruments and maintenance skills.
- Availability for 24-hour on-call duty to oversee lab operations.
