About the role

The Environmental Health Specialist is a public health professional whose primary purpose is to promote public health through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection, and enforcement of state, local, and federal environmental health laws and regulations. These responsibilities include permitting, inspection, and enforcement activities associated with private drinking water wells, on-site wastewater, and migrant housing. Other duties include water supply sampling, consultative visits, and complaint investigation.

The position involves extensive field work outside the office setting. The applicant must be in good physical health to perform required field evaluations, including traversing rough topography, lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing. Good visual acuity, including color perception, is necessary.

The individual must be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a current NC driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Permitting, inspection, and enforcement of laws and rules governing private drinking water wells, on-site wastewater, and migrant housing
• Water supply sampling, consultative visits, and complaint investigation
• Education, surveillance, and consultation to promote public health
• Field work requiring physical ability to traverse rough terrain and perform manual tasks
• Work well with the public and team members, demonstrating a positive attitude
• Exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with public contacts while enforcing public health laws
• Plan and schedule work activities and perform assignments

Requirements

• Four-year college or university degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a four-year degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours coursework in biology or physical science
• Prefer Registered Environmental Health Specialist in the State of North Carolina, or a degree in Environmental Health
• If not a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, training and certification will be provided if other requirements are met
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Basic computer user skills
• Current NC driver’s license

Schedule

Monday through Friday, usually 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility with hours required occasionally.
