About the role

Work as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in On-Site Waste Water Section and the Well Section. Also, complaint investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Make on-site evaluations to determine the location for on-site wastewater systems.
  • Accurately, timely and completely design septic systems and issue Improvement Permits and Authorization To Construct permits.
  • Make final inspections of installed septic systems and issue Operations Permits in a timely manner.
  • Investigate complaints of malfunctioning septic systems and issue Notice of Violations when necessary.
  • Educate property owners of septic maintenance.
  • Obtain second opinions related to difficult site limitations by the EH Supervisor III or the Regional REHS.
  • Make on-site evaluations for the location of private drinking water wells.
  • Accurately and timely issue well permits.
  • Make on-site inspections of grouting procedures, well head inspections and water sampling collection.
  • Ensure all paperwork is obtained and filled out to complete the sampling procedure and deliver samples for courier.
  • Issue COC’s for wells once all reports and well logs have been received.
  • Participate in Public Health Preparedness functions as assigned, attend training and seminars as required and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of state and federal environmental health laws and rules.
  • Practical knowledge of microbiology, chemistry, biology and environmental sciences as applied to environmental health.
  • General knowledge of community resources.
  • Working knowledge of other departments in Pender County, including but not limited to Zoning and Building Inspections.
  • Ability to comprehend and manage technical and administrative records and reports.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and communicate with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to plan work accordingly and timely.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year university or college with a minimum of 30 hours in courses in biological science or physical science, a four-year degree or a Master’s degree from an university with a degree in Environmental Science.
  • North Carolina Centralized Intern Training for income Registered Environmental Health Specialists and obtaining authorizations in On-site Wastewater and Wells.
  • Registered as a REHS by the North Carolina State Board of Registered Sanitarians.
