About the role
The Environmental Health Specialist 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 position in Fayette County Environmental Health Office District 4 Public Health involves conducting inspections and audits of assigned facilities/sites for compliance with applicable health codes. Responsibilities include interpreting regulatory issues, investigating complaints, performing inspections, and providing environmental education and technical assistance.
Responsibilities
- Interprets regulatory issues, technical issues, and analytical data to document compliance
- Investigates complaints, provides environmental education and technical assistance
- Performs inspections, interviews, technical reviews, and recommends enforcement actions as needed
- Plans and conducts facility audits and inspections
- Prepares sampling plans and collects samples in accordance with established procedures
- Provides information to the public, regulated community, and enforcement officers regarding environmental laws and regulations
- Responds to environmental emergencies and conducts safety evaluations
- Reviews permit applications; drafts, modifies, and issues permits in accordance with the rules, regulations, and established procedures
- Reviews permit requirements and regulations in order to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental laws
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with 27 semester hours (or 40 quarter hours) in laboratory sciences
- One year of experience at the lower-level PH Environmental Health Specialist 1 (RCP120) or position equivalent for Environmental Health Specialist 1
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences and one year of experience at the lower-level PH Environmental Health Specialist 2 (RCP121) or position equivalent for Environmental Health Specialist 2
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences and one year of experience at the lower-level PH Envir Compl Specialist 3 (RCP122) or position equivalent for Environmental Health Specialist 3
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences and one year of experience at the lower-level PH Envir Compl Specialist 4 (RCP123) or position equivalent for Environmental Health Specialist 4
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences and current registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian by the National Environmental Health Association or an equivalent recognized credentialing board and one year of experience as a PH Envir Compl Specialist 4 (RCP123) or position equivalent for Environmental Health Specialist 5
Qualifications
- Bilingual (Spanish/English Speaking)
- Experience in Public Health
- Food Service Standardization and ServSafe Certification
- A passing score on a nationally recognized registration examination for environmental health specialists or sanitarians (such as the examination given by the National Environmental Health Association or the professional examination service)
- Certified in the State Onsite Sewage Program or eligible for certification
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS) by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
- Recognized credentialing of a state or county board having equivalent standards as NEHA
- Currently qualified as a Standardized Retail Food Inspection Officer
