Under general supervision, supports the institute in environmental safety and health, ensuring compliance with city, state, and federal regulations.
Responsibilities
- Conduct radiation surveys and provide radiation training for employees.
- Perform noise surveys and laboratory safety inspections.
- Collect, analyze, ship, and pack samples.
- Collect, sort, and prepare wastes for disposal.
- Maintain emergency equipment and respond to accidents such as spills, fires, and falls.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three years of related work experience in industrial hygiene or safety; or four years of related work experience in a laboratory setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Must be eligible for certification as a Hazardous Material Handler.
- Basic understanding of general safety, fire safety, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental safety.
- Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EPA, NRC, and DOE regulations preferred.
- Superior professional-level written and verbal communication skills.
- High degree of professionalism, excellent judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage a wide variety of tasks and projects simultaneously while meeting multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, and Outlook; ability to learn department-specific computer systems.
Physical Requirements
- Work performed in office, laboratory, and outdoor environments.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, crawling, climbing (ladders, scaffolds, etc.), and overhead reaching.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds.
- Perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Wear personal protective equipment, including respirators.
- Work in proximity to research animals and in areas with hazardous materials and/or infectious agents, which may require vaccinations.
