The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director provides strategic leadership and governance for Health, Safety, and Environmental performance in US operations, ensuring safe, compliant, and sustainable execution of business activities. Key Accountabilities
Strategic Leadership & Culture
- Develop and deliver the EHS strategy aligned to business objectives, ensuring clear priorities, measurable outcomes, and visible leadership engagement.
- Drive cultural transformation by embedding accountability at all levels and ensuring leaders actively own EHS performance, not just compliance.
Management Systems, Governance & Compliance
- Own and continuously improve EHS management systems aligned with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 22301, ensuring consistent standards across regions and sites.
- Maintain full regulatory compliance across jurisdictions, including OSHA, EPA, MSHA, and DOT requirements in the US, supported by strong audit, reporting, and assurance processes.
Risk Management & Critical Controls
- Lead enterprise-wide risk identification and assessment, with particular focus on defining and managing critical risks.
- Ensure robust implementation of control frameworks, Management of Change processes, and operational risk reviews, embedding prevention rather than reaction across all activities.
- Establish proactive incident prevention strategies and ensure all significant incidents and near misses are investigated using structured root cause analysis.
- Drive consistent sharing of lessons learned and ensure corrective actions are effectively implemented and sustained across the organization.
Operational & Contractor Safety
- Ensure strong operational discipline through effective safety systems, including permit-to-work, isolation, and high-risk activity controls.
- Set and enforce robust contractor management standards, ensuring third-party activities meet company and regulatory expectations.
Environmental & Sustainability Performance
- Lead environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives, ensuring effective management of emissions, waste, and resources while supporting broader ESG commitments and continuous improvement in environmental performance.
Leadership, Capability & Performance
- Build and develop high-performing EHS teams while strengthening EHS capability within operational leadership.
- Establish clear performance expectations, supported by data-driven insights, regular reporting, and benchmarking to drive continuous improvement across all sites.
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline, supported by significant EHS experience (typically 10+ years) in manufacturing, chemicals, mining, metals, industrial processing or related heavy industry, or similarly complex environments, including multi-site or regional leadership responsibility.
- 7+ years’ experience of leadership including the ability to manage teams, drive accountability, and develop direct reports.
- A strong track record of influencing senior stakeholders, driving safety culture transformation, and delivering measurable risk reduction is essential.
- Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, NEBOSH, or equivalent are preferred, alongside the ability to operate effectively across different regulatory environments and cultural contexts.
Key Capabilities
- Strategic leadership, risk management expertise, strong regulatory knowledge, and the ability to influence across a complex organization are critical.
