Environmental Health Assistant I

About the role

The City of Norfolk's Department of Public Health seeks an experienced Environmental Health Assistant I to conduct thorough and systematic investigations for mosquito breeding on residential and commercial property. The position involves responding to complaints, educating the public, exterminating pests, and maintaining accurate records.

Responsibilities

• Conducts thorough and systematic investigations for mosquito breeding on residential and commercial property.
• Responds to complaints and educates the public about mosquito breeding during backyard surveys and other surveillance and abatement activities.
• Exterminates pests by formulating and dispensing mosquito and rodent chemicals in accordance with product labels, to include operating mosquito fogging trucks in the evening or early morning.
• If needed, engages in ditch maintenance, which includes the use of hand tools (hoe forks, bush axes, brush cutters).
• Maintains daily worksheets and accurate records of mosquito control activities and chemical applications.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.
• Junior college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools are likely sources.
• Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
• Category 8 pesticide certification is preferred.
• Category 8 Public Health Pesticide Applicator License required within 14 months of employment.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
• Tuition Assistance Program: Established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.

Pay

Department Starting Hourly Rate: $20.80

Schedule

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm, evening and weekend hours may be required
