Environmental, Health, and Safety Technician

Help create a safe and healthy Hokie experience as an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Technician. This hands-on role supports environmental health, industrial hygiene, fire and life safety, pest management, and wildlife management across Virginia Tech residence halls and dining facilities. No two days are alike—you may perform pest control treatments, conduct mold assessments, inspect fire safety equipment, or investigate indoor air quality concerns. Responsibilities

• Support environmental health and safety programs in residence halls and dining facilities.
• Perform pest control treatments and wildlife management.
• Conduct mold assessments and indoor air quality investigations.
• Inspect fire safety equipment and life safety systems.
• Assist with asbestos and lead inspections.
• Work independently in indoor and outdoor environments, including heights and confined spaces.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols.
• Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and coworkers.
• Complete electronic documentation and use computers for reporting.

• Year 1: Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator Certification
• Year 2: Virginia Asbestos Inspector License, Virginia Lead Inspector Certification
• Year 3: Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification

Additional certifications may include Virginia Wildlife Control Operator (WCO) and Certified Nuisance Animal Professional (CNAP). Timelines may adjust based on operational needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Willingness to work in varied environments (indoor/outdoor, heights, confined spaces).
• Ability to use computers and complete electronic documentation.
• Commitment to obtaining required certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in pest management, fire/life safety inspections, mold assessment, asbestos/lead inspections, building maintenance, or environmental health and safety.

Pay

Salary range: $50,000 - $55,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

• Full-time, 40 hours per week.
• Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM, with flexibility for customer service and emergency response.
• Non-exempt position (eligible for overtime).
