About the Role
Under the general direction of the EH&S Environmental Services Manager, this position manages the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) compliance program and supports the hazardous materials and hazardous waste programs. Serves as a subject matter expert in the CUPA and asbestos/lead program. The Specialist will participate in the department daily and after-hours "on-call" team to provide technical information and response to the campus community.
Key Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications
- Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Training Certificate
- Valid CA commercial driver's license with HazMat endorsement or able to obtain commercial license with HazMat endorsement within 6 months
- Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental health, occupational health, environmental toxicology, biological sciences, public health, or similar discipline. Different academic backgrounds with relevant work experience will also be considered
- Experience conducting and coordinating audits, investigations, evaluations, and achieving necessary corrective action in a timely manner
- Experience interpreting Federal and State Regulations found in 10CFR, 49CFR, 40CFR, 8CCR, 17CCR, 22CCR, 24CCR, 26CCR, 13CCR, the California Vehicle Code, Hazardous Waste Operations policies/procedures, and the campus NRC Radioactive Materials License
- Experience in forklift operation, ability to drive a manual transmission truck, and to use a drum dolly and a variety of pumps for transferring liquids
- Demonstrate technical writing skills to develop detailed compliance reports, environmental assessment reports, and correspondence
- Skill to interpret new regulations and determine their applicability to campus operations, and devise strategies and procedures for compliance
- Communication (oral, written, presentation, documentation) and interpersonal skills, interact with customers, convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs, and develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credential or have the experience and education to obtain the CHMM within 6 months
- Two to five years of relevant industrial hygiene experience with a focus on the following topics: Asbestos and lead industry (assessments, sampling, oversight, abatement, reporting, etc.), hazard assessments, and exposure sampling
- Skills to perform calculations for radioactive decay, package limits, disposal limits, toxicity of mixtures, and drum contents
Pay & Schedule
- Salary or Pay Range: $80,951.76/annually - $146,890.80/annually
- Salary Frequency: Annually
- Shift (Work Schedule): Monday – Friday, 8AM - 5PM
- Location: Davis, CA
- This position is 100% on-site

Work Environment
- This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy
- Valid CA driver's license required. A copy of DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment
- Obtain Commercial Driver's License with Hazardous Materials Endorsement within three months from date of hire and maintain throughout employment
- Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System
- This position involves Safety Sensitive Functions. This is a safety sensitive position and employment is contingent upon successful completion and maintenance of certification of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol Testing program; employee will be placed on the random testing pool list for drug and alcohol testing
- Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions
- Position requires employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials, radioactive materials and/or infectious diseases are present
- Must be willing to perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (BSL) 1 or 2 facility where non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus
