About the role

The Environmental Engineering Technician 1 will serve as an integral part of the Bureau of Air Quality Surveillance’s Laboratory Services Section in Rensselaer, NY. This is an hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine the actual termination date.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and document incoming and outgoing sample shipments and supplies.
  • Log in samples and transport them to the laboratory.
  • Clean sampling canisters and exchange liquid Nitrogen dewars.
  • Assist with canister stability and certification studies.
  • Assist other laboratory personnel in day-to-day activities related to air monitoring.
  • Perform duties that may require the use of a ladder.
  • Lift and/or move equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time.

Requirements

  • Must be physically able to perform the duties assigned.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required; must be able to drive a truck or van and capable of loading and unloading vehicles.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and possess knowledge of required technical computer programs.
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and climb ladders.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least 18 semester credit hours in any combination of the following courses: engineering (e.g., civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and/or sanitary); public health; environmental and/or engineering technology; drafting; mathematics; surveying; computer science; environmental science; and/or the natural and physical sciences. You must submit a list of qualifying courses with your application, including the course title, number of semester credit hours per course, name of college or university, and date (or expected date) of completion.
  • OR graduation from a high school technical education program in technical aeronautics, technical architectural drafting and building construction, technical chemistry, industrial chemistry, technical electricity/electronics, technical mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems, or computer circuitry.
  • OR four years of experience performing engineering technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; or as a surveyor or drafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Summa canisters and knowledge of the TO15 program.
  • Laboratory experience.
