HGL has an opening for an Environmental Engineer IV in the Ballston Lake, New York office, located 20 minutes north of Albany. This in-office position supports environmental engineering, remediation, and construction services for federal and state government clients, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Defense, and U.S. Department of Energy across the eastern United States.

About the Role

As an Engineer IV, you will collaborate with HGL’s high-performing team to support environmental remediation projects for various agencies. Initial duties include remedial investigation and design support, as well as oversight of remedial action (RA) projects. Projects may involve in situ thermal treatment, remediation, demolition, mine-waste cleanup, landfill cap construction, contaminated sediment removals, and groundwater treatment (both in-situ and pump-and-treat) and stabilization.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise junior and mid-level staff, including engineers, geologists, and scientists.
  • Develop and provide technical review of engineering studies, plans, designs, and specifications for environmental investigation and remediation.
  • Interface with program and project managers, senior technical staff, government customers, and RA contractors.
  • Manage characterization and remediation projects for Federal clients, including financials, scope, schedule, and deliverables.
  • Direct, manage, and lead project teams to meet project objectives in line with corporate and client expectations.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, regulators, project team members, and leadership.
  • Oversee and assist in preparing project deliverables, including remediation work plans, UFP-QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda, and remedial design documents.
  • Develop alternatives evaluation and design supporting environmental remediation activities, such as soil excavation, in situ treatment, air sparging, and waste management.
  • Prepare design calculations, data collection and analysis, conceptual site model development, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Utilize approved digital and AI-assisted tools to support technical documentation, data analysis, project communications, and workflow efficiency.
  • Provide technical support during investigation, planning, design, implementation, and completion (as-built) project phases.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the environmental engineering field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field related to Environmental Studies, such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Strong writing skills with prior experience contributing to technical reports, memoranda, and work plans.
  • Experience coordinating field subcontractors for environmental investigation and/or remediation activities.
  • Knowledge and experience on a CERCLA, DoD, DOE, EPA, or RCRA project/site.
  • Engineer-in-Training Certification.
  • OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new technologies and digital tools to improve project delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Ability to execute multiple projects and tasks concurrently while adhering to cost and schedule.

Qualifications

  • Experience working on state and U.S. federal contracts.
  • Experience with remediation of contaminants of concern, including volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and PFAS investigation and remediation.
  • Experience with multiple remedial technologies—evaluation and design.
  • Experience using generative AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to improve technical writing, data analysis, research, visualization, or project delivery efficiency.
  • Preparation of engineering technical specifications.
  • M.S. degree in engineering with a focus in Environmental Studies or a related field.
  • Professional License in field of study with an environmental focus or ability to obtain PE within 18-24 months of employment.
  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP).

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Prolonged sitting up to 70% of the time.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% per year.
  • Office work environment.

Pay

The annual salary for this position ranges from $93,766 to $145,337. The final salary may be impacted by factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.

Schedule

HGL office work follows a 5-day work week; however, fieldwork schedules may deviate based on job requirements and may require longer hours and weekends. This position requires up to 25% travel per year.
