About the role

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to independently perform detailed engineering surveys and review assessments. The position involves assisting in performing technical review, planning, and directing the enforcement of laws and regulations to ensure safe and sanitary conditions for swimming pools, recreation areas, and bathing beaches.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform detailed engineering surveys and review assessments.
  • Assist in performing technical review, planning, and directing the enforcement of laws and regulations.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports of assessment, inspections, and investigations.
  • Conduct facility assessments and studies and develop technical reports on various environmental engineering aspects of swimming facilities, and recreational water systems.
  • Participate in conferences with regulated entities, owners/operators, employees, and the general public to explain statutory requirements and regulatory compliance.
  • Attend and complete mandatory knowledge-based and practical training required by the Office of Health Protection standard operating procedures and program requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Requirements

Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and coursework in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering. Requires two (2) years professional experience in the practice of environmental engineering, sanitary engineering, or public health engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineering degree from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited university.
  • Two (2) years of experience conducting detailed on-site professional environmental engineering investigations and studies for general engineering program activities.
  • Two (2) years of experience preparing detailed reports on investigation findings, sample reports or corrective action.
  • Two (2) years of experience performing reviews of licensure applications.
  • Two (2) years of experience in environmental field sampling equipment and testing techniques.
  • Two (2) years of experience responding to routine public inquiries by phone, email or mail regarding rules and regulations.
  • Two (2) years of work experience using Microsoft software products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires use of personal vehicle for extensive work-related travel within the State.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
