Environmental Engineer

About the Role

The Environmental Engineer participates in establishing and maintaining a safe and healthful environment and culture for all employees, customers, visitors, and other community stakeholders at the Constellium-Muscle Shoals site. This role involves recommending, developing, and implementing programs that enhance environmental awareness and compliance while minimizing Constellium’s exposure to loss. The engineer ensures high standards of environmental safety and operational excellence by managing day-to-day waste processes and leading sustainability initiatives focused on environmental impact, sustainable procurement, waste elimination, toxicity reduction, and energy and water improvement.

Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge of federal, state, and local waste permitting requirements and regulations.
• Provide support on Clean Water Act, NPDES, Clean Air Act permits, Spill Prevention Controls and Countermeasures (SPCC), Storm Water Pollution Prevention, RCRA, and groundwater protection.
• Assist in compliance efforts for operations adherence to Clean Air Act, MACT Standards, Title V permitting, calculations of emissions inventories, air emission reduction initiatives, and other air program requirements.
• Investigate employee complaints concerning exposure to hazardous materials or air pollutants; prepare, review, and update environmental investigation reports.
• Manage all site waste generation, waste storage areas, and waste disposal activities, including preparation of waste characterization forms.
• Participate in site waste minimization and pollution prevention programs.
• Drive compliance activities with respect to regulatory and corporate requirements.
• Maintain accurate records related to chemical inventories, complaint investigations, and shipments of hazardous wastes.
• Work with external consultants to perform modeling analysis and other tasks as needed.
• Stay informed of current and proposed regulations related to assigned program areas.
• Design projects leading to environmental protection, such as water reclamation facilities, air pollution control systems, and operations that convert waste to energy.
• Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures.
• Provide technical support for environmental remediation projects and legal actions.
• Analyze scientific data and perform quality-control checks to correct malfunctioning equipment.
• Monitor progress of environmental improvement programs.
• Inspect facilities and programs to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
• Evaluate significance of hazards and determine proper disposal and management methods.
• Assist with other program activities, including water, air, and waste initiatives.
• Maintain oversight of site hazardous storage area and compliance to regulations.

Requirements

• BS in a technical discipline, preferably in environmental engineering, environmental science, or a related field, and 4 years of relevant work experience; in lieu of a degree, a High School Diploma or GED and 7+ years of relevant work experience.
• Working knowledge of hazardous materials, air and water regulatory compliance, with a strong emphasis on waste management, sustainability, and waste minimization/reuse.
• Demonstrated functional/technical expertise in environmental competencies such as air and water regulatory compliance, waste management, and associated permitting.
• Ability to read and interpret complex regulations and ensure site compliance.
• Environmental regulatory knowledge in air, water, and solid/hazardous waste.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and influence/negotiate with various levels of the organization and regulatory agencies.
• Ability to work effectively with operations, technical, and maintenance personnel, and interact positively with environmental professionals and the business to maximize results.
• Self-driven initiative to identify needs, take effective action, and lead/implement change while maintaining Constellium values.
• Experience inspecting for hazardous materials and understanding processes that produce hazardous wastes and air pollutants.
• Good interpersonal relationship skills and experience in profiling, manifesting, and shipping waste.
• Result orientation, accountability, negotiation, problem-solving, project and change management, and teamwork.
• Strong communication, autonomy, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to perform, understand, and communicate detailed information analysis and evaluation, with a track record of working effectively in a team-based environment.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and SAP.
• Must pass a drug screen and background check, including criminal, employment, and education verifications.
• Current Hazardous Waste Operations 40-hour certification or the ability to obtain it within the first 60 days of employment.
