About the role

As an Environmental Education Specialist with the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR), you will help to connect people to Pennsylvania’s natural and cultural heritage by developing, presenting, and coordinating educational programs at Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center. This seasonal, full-time position is ideal for those who enjoy teaching, planning programs, and working outdoors, guiding learners of all ages through engaging activities focused on the environment and local history.

Responsibilities

  • Present environmental and historical education programs, guided walks, and outdoor learning activities
  • Schedule programs, prepare lesson plans, and conduct workshops aligned with approved educational standards
  • Support schools, civic groups, and organizations by providing guidance for environmental learning efforts
  • Operate resource libraries and maintain natural, historic, cultural, and archeological collections
  • Oversee the use and upkeep of indoor and outdoor educational facilities and equipment
  • Prepare reports, lesson plans, correspondence, and other written materials to support programming

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, the natural sciences, social sciences, or parks and recreation; or an equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Applicants may be considered to have met the educational requirement if they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree
  • Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Prescribed uniform required
  • A non-commercial Class C Driver’s License
  • CPR certification obtained within 12 months of employment
  • Satisfactory completion of a background investigation, including PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance
  • Ability to meet Pennsylvania residency requirements

Schedule

This is a seasonal, full-time position running approximately from March 2026 to November 2026, followed by leave without pay until re-employment in March 2027. Work is scheduled 5 days per week for 37.5 hours, including a 30-minute lunch. Work days and shifts vary and may include weekends, evenings, holidays, and occasional overtime or travel. Telework is not permitted.
