Environmental Education Instructor
About the Role
Join the Sound to Sea Environmental Education Program, a secular program of Trinity Center located on a 58-acre island preserve on North Carolina's Southern Outer Banks. As an instructor, you will teach classes on the five major island habitats: the beach, maritime forest, freshwater pond, salt marsh, and sound. Topics include island ecology, coastal cultures, and human impacts, using hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to engage diverse populations.
Instructors are trained to work with and care for birds of prey, salt and freshwater aquariums, and other education animals. You will alternate overnight duty and receive CPR/first aid training. School year or year-round contracts are available, with most instructors staying for one to two years.
Responsibilities
- Teach classes on island ecology, coastal cultures, and human impacts.
- Develop and deliver hands-on, multidisciplinary curriculum for diverse groups.
- Care for and utilize educational animals, including birds of prey and aquarium species.
- Alternate overnight duty and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Create and adapt programs for elementary school students through senior adults.
Requirements
- College degree in a related field.
- Ability and desire to work with students from elementary school to senior adults in small and large group settings.
- Desire to live in an intentional community.
- Sense of humor, creativity, and flexibility.
Compensation and Benefits
- Pay: $335 per week, with pay raises offered at the end of each season.
