Environmental Compliance Manager
About the role
Reporting directly to the Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer, and Associate General Counsel, the Environmental Compliance Manager will be a key member of the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team. This position has global responsibilities - IDEX has over 50 businesses, over 9,000 employees, and operations in over 20 countries. The position will be hybrid, with remote working on Mondays and Fridays and office working Tuesday through Thursday (at IDEX’s corporate office in Northbrook, IL), when not traveling, to foster better collaboration, connection, and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert for IDEX, acting as resource to its business units in the area of environmental compliance, strategy, risk and impact reduction, and auditing.
- Develop and implement environmental policies, procedures, programs, and strategies in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations; monitor business unit compliance with policies, procedures and programs.
- Lead and/or provide oversight for corporate management of environmental enterprise requirements for permitting, waste management, vendor assessment, shipping/receiving/storing hazardous material and waste, chemical management/approval/reporting, remedial programs, and environmental reserves.
- Drive thorough environmental incident reviews, sharing of learnings, and follow up/closure; use learnings from events to support strategy and drive continuous improvement across the enterprise; lead investigations of select spills/releases, exceedances, or potentially severe environmental events.
- Train, mentor, and develop EHS professionals at the business units with respect to environmental programs, requirements, risks, and risk mitigation/reduction.
- Represent IDEX and its business units with external stakeholders when required.
- Maintain relationships with applicable regulatory authorities and internal stakeholders when required.
- Monitor and understand emerging trends in environmental compliance programs and requirements; identify and communicate potential impacts; develop short and long term strategies to ensure adequate preparedness and response; implement use of electronic storage and management of key IDEX environmental recordkeeping initiatives.
- Partner with stakeholders to conduct due diligence reviews on potential acquisition targets; determine processes to integrate and train new acquisitions, and lead environmental compliance integration efforts.
- Oversee environmental consulting, engineering firms, and environmental law firms, as well as specialty vendors. Develop relationships to understand and drive efficiency across the IDEX enterprise.
- Support the development of key performance metrics (KPIs) for the organization to address areas of potential opportunity or concern; track performance of identified metrics with a goal of year over year progress.
- Lead audits and implement follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and improve performance.
- Partner with and manage external consultants and contractors.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10+ years of related experience required, including leadership role(s) in managing environmental compliance programs.
- Prior experience in a multi-site and global manufacturing environment is required.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher required.
- Genuine interest and passion for environmental issues, relevant regulations, and environmental sustainability.
- Advanced knowledge of global environmental regulations in the following jurisdictions: U.S., Canada, Europe, India and China.
- Experience evaluating and managing external environmental consultants or engineering firms.
- Experience conducting risk assessments and environmental audits.
- Experience with energy, waste, and water reduction strategies and projects preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with engaging people across organizations and international locations to build a culture of environmental compliance and excellence.
- Team player, with the ability to think conceptually, flexibly, and strategically.
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills.
- Ability to travel, both domestically and internationally without restriction, up to 40% of the time.
Qualifications
Of critical importance will be the ability to establish credible working relationships with the company’s executive leadership team, business and functional leaders throughout the company, the corporate EHS and sustainability teams, and EHS professionals located at IDEX’s business units.

Benefits
Total Rewards: The compensation range for this position is $124,000.00 - $186,000.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
