Environmental Biologist / Scheduling Biologist

Dudek is a 100% employee-owned firm delivering projects that improve and protect the built and natural environments of communities throughout the United States. As a Biologist, you’ll play a critical role in supporting Dudek’s biological resource field staffing needs and coordination. You’ll work closely with project managers, technical leads, and field biologists to allocate the right staff with the correct qualifications, in the appropriate region, and availability—all while prioritizing safety. This hybrid position requires a strong understanding of biological survey methods, including protocol surveys, seasonal survey limitations, permitting requirements, and logistical field operations.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary coordinator for biological resource field staffing needs, leveraging your expertise in protocol survey methods, seasonal survey limitations, permitting requirements, and field logistics.
- Collaborate with project managers, technical leads, and internal teams to determine anticipated field staffing needs and identify the most appropriate field staff for project sites.
- Maintain and regularly update staff experience, skills, permitting, training, and availability to support field staffing.
- Participate in regular scheduling meetings with internal practice groups and project managers, contributing to weekly staffing schedules.
- Provide staff schedules to project managers, firmwide services groups, and field staff members.
- Conduct biological fieldwork as needed, including rare plant surveys, wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, vegetation mapping, and aquatic resource delineations.
- Prepare reports summarizing methodology, field survey results, and recommendations with oversight from senior-level staff.
- Work independently and as part of a team to complete tasks on time and within budget.
- Work in remote field locations, hike steep slopes, and operate in all types of weather conditions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental science, or a related natural resources field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in biological resource consulting or equivalent experience in a regulatory agency setting, with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Organized with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
- Basic problem-resolution skills.
- Self-motivated with an interest in learning and growing as part of a project team.
- Dependable and able to work flexible hours.
- Valid driver’s license and active personal automobile liability insurance by the first day of employment.
- Knowledge of special-status plant species, vegetation communities, and sensitive vegetation resources in the Southern California region.
- Understanding of state and federal statutes, regulations, and permitting requirements relating to biological resources (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Acts, California Porter-Cologne Water Quality Control Act, California Fish and Game Code).
- Willingness to travel for work, including overnight stays in hotels.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience in a logistics or scheduling role.
- Master’s degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental science, or a related natural resources field.
- Experience maintaining and updating information within database software.
Pay
$80,000–$90,000 annually. Final compensation will be based on experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid role operating in both remote and office-based environments, using standard office equipment.
- Occasional project site visits, which may include exposure to excessive noise, uneven walking surfaces, extreme weather, and moving vehicles/equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work on a computer, sitting or standing for long periods in an office or remote setting.
- Capable of bending, squatting, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 35 lbs. unassisted; 50 lbs. in a team lift.
- Attend in-person and virtual meetings, and communicate via phone with agency representatives and the public.
- Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Outdoor fieldwork may involve walking/trekking in uneven terrain over long distances in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
