About the Role

Miller Johnson is seeking an experienced Environmental Attorney to join our growing practice. As Miller Johnson continues to grow in Detroit and across Michigan, our environmental work is also expanding, creating an opportunity for a senior attorney to help build and shape the practice. The right candidate will build upon an established foundation of environmental work, advise clients on sophisticated regulatory, transactional, and related matters, collaborate with attorneys across the firm, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients. This role offers the opportunity to deepen the firm’s environmental capabilities while playing a meaningful role in the continued growth and direction of the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Advising clients on federal and state environmental regulatory matters, including compliance, permitting, reporting, enforcement, waste management, site remediation, and natural resource issues.
  • Representing clients in environmental investigations, agency inquiries, notices of violation, enforcement actions, and other administrative or regulatory proceedings.
  • Providing environmental counsel on mergers and acquisitions, real estate and development transactions, due diligence, risk assessment, and other business matters involving environmental considerations.
  • Advising clients on environmental disputes and collaborating with litigation attorneys on contested matters and related litigation.
  • Collaborating with attorneys across the firm to provide coordinated, practical solutions to environmental issues.
  • Developing and deepening client relationships, contributing to business development efforts, and identifying opportunities to expand the firm’s environmental services.
  • Mentoring and supporting attorneys who assist with environmental matters as the practice continues to grow.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admission to the State Bar of Michigan or eligibility for admission in Michigan.
  • Significant experience advising clients on complex federal and state environmental regulatory matters.
  • Experience advising clients on air emissions and related permitting matters is preferred.
  • Environmental litigation experience is a plus.
  • An existing book of business is strongly preferred; candidates with demonstrated business development ability and an interest in growing a practice are encouraged to apply.

  • Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills, with sound judgment and a practical approach to client service.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sophisticated matters independently and provide practical, business-minded counsel.
  • Strong client relationship and business development skills, with an interest in helping grow and shape the firm’s environmental practice.
