About the role
Environmental Area Operations Manager
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategies that expand environmental compliance, permitting, and planning services and environmental remediation and geophysics services across federal, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and other key client sectors.
- Provide overall operational governance by leading Area performance for environmental compliance, marine sciences, and planning services and environmental remediation and geophysics services leveraging the systems that make business work including operations, project delivery, staff development, and client engagement, ensuring alignment with HDR’s strategic objectives.
- Oversee delivery of complex environmental compliance, planning, and marine sciences programs, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, budget, safety, quality, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEPA, air quality, assessment, corral mitigation, whale tagging, etc.).
- Oversee and manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, geologists, and hydrogeologists supporting site investigation and remediation projects, particularly for DoD installations.
- Oversee and support regional and area operations, including marketing, project delivery, staff development, quality assurance, safety, and client relationship management, ensuring alignment with company goals and objectives.
- Monitor operational and project performance, assess environmental program effectiveness, and implement corrective actions to drive performance, profitability, and growth.
- Lead business development efforts, including identifying and pursuing new opportunities, strengthening client relationships, supporting proposals and contract negotiations, and contributing to strategic growth initiatives.
- Provide technical and operational support to section leads and project teams, including resolving complex issues, supporting problem projects, and ensuring regulatory and contractual alignment.
- Foster a culture of communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement by mentoring staff, supporting training and development, succession planning, encouraging engagement and professional growth across teams.
- Facilitate cross-functional collaboration with EOC leadership, Professional Services Manager, Professional Services Director, and Business Groups to strengthen environmental technical capabilities and enhance service delivery.
- Implement company policy and procedures, including quality, safety, recruiting and risk management.
- Serve as a visible leader and professional role model internally and externally, representing HDR in regulatory, client, and community engagements.
- Prepare and execute proposals, teaming agreements, MSAs, subcontracts, and deliverables, and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Qualifications
- Possess signatory authority as needed.
- Master's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, or related field.
- One of more relevant certifications such as CHMM, REM, CESCO, REP, etc.
- Professional Engineering (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) license, OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
- Experience managing large compliance projects in the United States and on DoD installations.
- Experience managing CERCLA and RCRA remediation projects.
- Proven ability to identify and write technical proposals for complex remediation investigations, feasibility studies, and/or remedial designs on DoD Installations with a preference within the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) South Atlantic Division geographic area and the ability to expand into other USACE Divisions.
- Ability to interact and collaborate with various investigation and design teams.
- Proficiency with MS Office and other software tools, including Esri products.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
