About the role

SMC is seeking an Entry Level Mechanical Engineer/Designer to help execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and various system calculations. This candidate will execute specific design tasks as part of a broader mechanical team while furthering their own knowledge and developing their skills, typically under the guidance of senior and/or mid-level engineers.

The mechanical design scope will be part of a broader project, requiring interface with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as external disciplines including architectural, civil, and structural. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, is eager to learn, and wants to grow their expertise and career at a rapid pace. This position is open to full-time, part-time, and internship/co-op applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
  • Assist with performing airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems.
  • Build an understanding and ability to develop hydronic and airflow flow diagrams.
  • Learn how to select and specify HVAC equipment.
  • Assist with meeting project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Review and gain an understanding of local and national construction codes and project specifications to grow a broader understanding of the construction process.
  • Use Microsoft tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
  • Travel to project sites when required (less than 10% travel).
  • Communicate clearly with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Take direction from senior and mid-level engineers and designers to execute delivery of specific design elements.
  • Work independently while coordinating with senior personnel and other disciplines.
  • Actively participate in training and mentoring opportunities to grow knowledge and capabilities.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Requirements

  • 2 or 4-year degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology preferred; HVAC construction experience with a drafting certification will also be considered.
  • Past internship, co-op, or work experience in a consulting engineering role is a plus.
  • Experience working in the construction industry is a plus.
  • Experience using Revit in either an educational or professional context is a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is a plus.

Pay

Base compensation: $45,000–$150,000 (actual compensation varies based on education, experience, skills, and location).
