Entry-Level Field Technician - Construction Materials Testing

About the role

Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions, is seeking an Entry-Level Field Technician to join the Professional Services Industries Inc. (Intertek-PSI) team in Chesapeake, Virginia. This role offers a versatile career in the architectural, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry, supporting Intertek’s Building and Construction division. The position involves performing testing, project-specific observations, and site assessments under supervision, contributing to the reliability, safety, and performance of developments and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Performs testing, project-specific observations, and site assessments under general supervision or detailed controlled procedures.
• Operates testing equipment and conducts tests (e.g., soil, concrete) and provides assessment of data through reporting.
• Works from drawings, specifications, and diagrams to perform tasks and make detailed observations.
• Provides limited interpretation of test results and maintains detailed documentation of test data.
• Operates a calculator to compute mathematical test results and communicates effectively with clients and project teams.
• Adheres to safety practices and policies to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.

Requirements

• Effective communication skills (written, verbal, and listening) and solid interpersonal skills.
• Basic math, calculator, and computer skills.
• Ability to read and understand work plans.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable driving record.
• Ability to work off-shift and overtime as needed.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, move, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; occasionally over 50 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make sound discriminations.
• Ability to kneel and squat occasionally, walk and stand for long periods, and work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (hot and cold).
• Ability to climb occasionally.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Experience performing field construction materials testing and/or inspections preferred.
• No experience required—Intertek offers in-house training.
• ACI/ICC/WACEL certifications highly preferred.
