Position is eligible for hybrid telework workweek

About the role

Manages and supports systems administration for Windows enterprise server hardware and its associated components in accordance with system standards, procedures, and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Administer Windows Server operating systems within a complex enterprise environment, ensuring system availability, performance, security, and reliability.
  • Manage and maintain Active Directory, including user and group administration, organizational units, Group Policy Objects (GPOs), and directory services.
  • Administer Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID environments, including user account provisioning, licensing, authentication, and access management.
  • Deploy, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot virtual machines and virtualization infrastructure to support enterprise applications and services.
  • Plan, implement, and validate server patching, security updates, and vulnerability remediation activities to maintain compliance with organizational security standards.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot enterprise systems.
  • Handle backup and recovery operations.
  • Maintain documentation of systems, procedures, changes, and work performed.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and maintenance windows.
  • Support district-wide infrastructure serving approximately 200+ schools and facilities.
  • Comply with all Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) standards, procedures, and processes, including accurate completion of required administrative documents such as timesheets, leave forms, and expense reports.
  • Provide input to management in identifying and implementing systems and process improvements.
  • Work in team environments on special projects (school conversions/upgrades/design reviews), as requested.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in a relevant computer or technology-related field.
  • Two years of experience supporting Windows server environments or enterprise infrastructure systems.
  • Three years of systems administration experience in Windows environment configuring, troubleshooting, and repairing server hardware.
  • Proven experience with backup and restore technologies.
  • An equivalent combination of education, technical training certifications, and relevant experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.
  • Ability to obtain relevant Microsoft, hypervisor, or cloud certification within 12 months of hire.

Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration; Google Apps.
  • Extensive knowledge of Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) concepts.
  • Extensive knowledge of file and print services.
  • Extensive knowledge of virtualization concepts (VMware, Hyper-V, or similar).
  • Extensive knowledge of PowerShell fundamentals.
  • Extensive knowledge of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking fundamentals.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server administration.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of group policy fundamentals.
  • Considerable knowledge of active directory users, groups, and organizational units.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot server and application issues.
  • Ability to document and follow procedures and processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with little supervision.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to participate in after-hours maintenance and emergency support activities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, attorneys, parents, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Three years of Windows Server administration experience.
  • Experience supporting the following: active directory at enterprise scale, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft 365 administration, VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, PowerShell scripting and automation, enterprise backup solutions, identity and access management systems, Azure cloud services, and K-12 educational environments.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, students, and the community. Work at times requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or exert up to 25 pounds. Physical requirements are consistent with those for medium work. The work requires driving automotive equipment.
