Job Summary

The Enterprise Database Specialist oversees the development, utilization, and maintenance of the institutional database, including data and system security in accordance with hardware and software requirements, UT San Antonio user and client objectives, and critical databases that impact university-wide deployments.

Core Responsibilities

  • Supports departmental operations in a high-production environment by proactively managing the performance, optimization, integrity, and security of institutional databases and systems (e.g., SIS).
  • Collaborates with the technical lead to advise management on university database and technology matters supporting faculty, staff, and students.
  • Consults with and advises users of various databases.
  • Assigns personnel to various projects and oversees their activities.
  • Affords assistance in setting up, monitoring, and maintaining disaster recovery solutions for enterprise production databases.
  • Manages tests and provides support to multiple enterprise-wide database systems and applications.
  • Designs, creates, installs, and maintains highly available and secure enterprise database instances, including database architecture, database back-ups, creation of databases, and database objects such as tables, indexes, views, triggers, and stored procedures to support enterprise-level applications like the Student Information System.
  • Develops and enforces standards and procedures for database maintenance, documentation, and configuration.
  • Ensures high availability of databases in a Microsoft Cluster, Oracle RAC, or similar environment.
  • Modifies database programs to increase processing performance and performance tuning.
  • Assists in planning the database environment to include database capacity planning, processing, capacity, storage capacity, backup capacity, and future needs/requirements.
  • Assists in projecting long-range requirements for database administration in conjunction with the Enterprise Database Administrator, managers in the information systems function, and business function managers.
  • Works as a member of the technology team to assist in providing maximum availability and support for information technology systems.
  • Affords assurance of the timely completion of the database project within the estimated costs.
  • Consults on server design, coordinates changes to server application, and performs successful upgrades and implementation of existing and emerging technologies in database and application systems environment.
  • Schedules and performs installation and upgrades of enterprise-level databases and applications, and maintains them in accordance with established information technology policies and procedures.
  • Affords assistance in creating and maintaining documentation about the university database environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Five (5) years of related work experience, including experience with Ellucian Banner.
